Summary Report of 2001/02 Activities of the UI Charter Committee on Human Rights 1. Sponsored a discussion in conjunction with the community read in (All Johnson County Reads the Same Book) of The Last Summer of Reason by Tahar Djaout. Burns Weston, Executive Director of The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR), facilitated the discussion on December 10, 2001. 2. Per request from President Coleman, reviewed Worker Rights Consortium documents alleging violations of UI Licensee Code of Conduct by the New Era Cap Company of Derby, New York. Recommended on February 25, 2002, that the University of Iowa terminate our licence agreement with New Era until proof of steps toward remediation and good faith negotiation on the part of New Era Cap Company exists. 3. Solicited nominations for the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award and reviewed materials submitted. 4. Discussed the nomination process for the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award and proposed further evaluation at a future meeting. 5. Sponsored a presentation on National Origin and Citizenship Discrimination by Diane Finnerty and Jan Waterhouse, Office of Affirmative Action, and Cheryl Mason, Office for International Students and Scholars, on April 8, 2002. 6. Dan E. Teets will present the Philip G. Hubbard Human Rights Award to a nominated student at the Finkbine Dinner on April 16, 2002. Respectfully submitted by Dan E.
