THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA April 10, 1996 Warren W. Piette Faculty Senate President The University of Iowa Dear Dr. Piette, The University of Iowa Human Rights Committee is charged with investigating complaints of violations of the human rights policy, and promoting diversity on campus. Committee members include three staff, three students and three faculty members. The committee met monthly in the 1995/96 school year. As the number of other offices that address issues of discrimination and harassment has grown in the years since the Human Rights Committee was formed, consequently our case load has decreased dramatically, In fact, we had no complaints in the 1995/96 academic year. We did have lengthy discussions related to the human rights policy and recommended to President Coleman two changes in the policy that make our policy consistent with the Iowa City Human Rights Statement. The letter outlining our recommendation is attached. We have not yet heard if the President has accepted these changes. In two other activities, we selected a winner of the Philip Hubbard Human Rights Award in March. The winner, Alfred Barbagallo, a student in the College of Law, will be honored at the annual Finkbine Dinner in mid April. We are also in the process of writing a report on incidents of violence that have occurred on campus this academic year. We are awaiting data from one university office before this report can be completed. I will forward this report to you when it is completed. Yours truly, [actual signature] Michele J. Eliason, Ph.D. Chair of Human Rights Committee Assistant Professor of Nursing 372 Nursing Building ph. 335-2449 or 335-7061 Human Rights Committee Iowa City, Iowa 52242
