response, the committee rewrote parts of the nomination letter. The Human Rights Committee sent over 350 officers of academic governance senates/councils, advocacy groups and recognized student organizations a one-page document of goals and recommendations from the Education Subcommittee of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Staff and Faculty Association. The document was submitted for the committee's review, and the committee asked campus groups for their input. The committee is waiting for a response from the Faculty Senate Welfare Committee and Staff Council before proceeding with discussion. For several years, the human rights complaints have all been about displays in the display cases in the Iowa Memorial Union. After reviewing the only complaint of the year and determining that the display did not violate the Human Rights Policy, the committee decided to review the "IMU Policy For Use of Display Cases" to see if the Human Rights Committee had any suggestions for additional wording or rewording to avoid human rights complaints against displays which are clearly protected by free speech and do not violate the Human Rights Policy. The committee is currently reviewing the display case policy, and the IMU Administration is waiting for any assistance the committee is able to provide.
