2. "DOWN ON THE FARM" Introduction to New Students Welcome to the fold. By now you've received much official literature telling you about the University of Iowa. This material generally deals with one basic theme - how to fit smoothly into the university machine. From admissions procedures to disciplinary actions to housing requirements to fall-out shelter instructions, the official publications set forth the rules to be imposed on you. Of course, an effort is made to picture the machine as 'an adventure in learning' or 'an experiment in American Democracy'. This is not an official handbook, and its purpose is not to tell you how to conform. We would like to offer a different analysis of the university and alternate ways of dealing with the institution. To start, we offer three general conclusions to shatter some basic myths about the university. (1) The university isn't a democratic institution (2) The university is not committed to education. (3) The university is not a neutral institution, and does not serve the best interests of a free society. We think that after you have been here a while you will agree with these conclusions. If so, we hope you will help in changing the university to serve the people.
