The real power at the University of Iowa lies in the 9-member Board of Regents and their handpicked University President. The Regents are appointed by the governor of Iowa, usually by past associations or political favor. All are bankers, businessmen, or politicians. For example, William Quarton is president of WMT-TV, Donald Shaw is director of Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric. Most, though, are small-time moneymen or politicians, and show no direct links with midwest ruling circles. Nevertheless. they have proven to serve Corporate America and its institutions well. The Regents are a part of a myth of community control. They neither represent the state's voters in any democratic fashion nor do they represent students. As always, the real rulers keep power. They use the myth of democracy within the educational institutions and within party politics to mislead people. They use a mass media to split students and tax payers into interest groups over who should control the schools and to ignore issues and create false 'generation gaps'. The Regents act against the interests of both students and voters. A national survey of 1230 universities and colleges has shown that Iowa ranked second in the nation - behind New York - in increased student protest in the 1960's Des Moines Register 7/18/70
