9. KENT STATE - JACKSON STATE A great deal of the student strikes last spring occurred as a result of the killing of four white students at Kent State during a protest against U.S. imperialism. There was far less outcry when blacks were murdered at Jackson State and Augusta while protesting against racism and ROTC. The racism that led to the murders in the South exists in this community, too. Shortly after the mass arrest of 250 demonstrators on the steps of Old Capitol, several black students were arrested in downtown Iowa City, while the Highway Patrol escorted the 250 to busses in an almost gentle manner, the Iowa City police (commonly known as pigs) used shotgun blasts on the black students. This is only the most flagrant example of racism in this community. In literature and art we are taught that our understanding of art makes us superior to those outside the university ; we are a cultural elite, characterized by individualism and isolation from the rest of society. The one basic, indispensible function of the university is the training of its students in skills and attitudes that will make them useful to the government and to large corporations. They need people who will fit in well, who have the necessary training, who will observe carefully the power relationships of the agency or company hierarchy.
