(Seems Like Old Times) Donald Justice, Ph.D. UI, 1954, Professor of English, taught UI Writers' Workshop until 1982, and served as Acting Director of Poetry in the Workshop, 1967. Justice received the Pulitzer Prize in 1980 for his fourth book of poetry. Selected Poems. In 1959 he was awarded the Lamont Poetry Selection from the Academy of American Poets, in 1965 he received the Harriet Monroe Prize, and in 1974 he received the American Academy of National Institute of Arts and Letters Literary Award. In a newspaper interview a former student said, " He doesn't say more than he knows." And in the same interview Justice is quoted, " Poetry is elitist -- an elitist art, for better or worse, that's the fact of the matter." ( Robert Hullihan, Des Moines Sunday Register, 4/20/80) While a resident of Iowa City, Justice lived at 1041 E Burlington Street. He now lives in his home state of Florida. Galway Kinnell, taught 1970-61, UI Writers' Workshop. He has been the recipient of the Landon Translation Award (1978) the James A. Michener Series Abroad award (19840 from the Academy of American Ports, and the John D and Catherine T McArthur Award. Kinnell's collection, Selected Poems, was published in 1982. He teaches at New York University. William Kinsella, 1978 MFA UI Writers' Workshop. He has published 14 books, including Shoeless Joe, which became the film, " Field of Dreams" -- nominated for an Academy Award in 1990. Other awards include Books in Canada First Novel Award, Canadian Authors' Association Prize for Fiction, Writers' Guild of Alberta O'Hagan Novel Medal and Alberta Achievement Award for Excellence in Literature. He lives at 335 S Johnson St. William Kittredge, MFA UI Writers' Workshop, 1968. "Owning It All" (1987) and "We are not in this Together" (1984) have been published in Graywolf. He has also published in the Paris Review and Harpers. Kittredge teaches at the University of Montana. John E. Leggett, Professor of English and Creative Writing, and Director of the UI Writers' Workshop from 1970-1987. Leggett had worked as a publisher's representative for 17 years and taught one year at the University of California, Newport Beach before coming to UI.In an interview he said, " publishing houses used to be patrons of young writers, this is no longer true. Universities have had to take over the protective function." (Cathy Crawford, Daily Iowan, 11/6/70) Leggett's first novel, Wilder Stone, was published when he was 40 years of age. In addition he has published, Ross and Tom, Gloucester Branch, Who Took the Gold Away, Gulliver House and a textbook, Elements of Literature (1989). Upon graduation from Yale Leggett sold his first story to the Ladies Home Journal, was offered a screen test, and headed for New York. " ...
