ACT II Two hours later...a small room, containing a desk and two chairs. On the desk are several books and many sheets of paper. Mr. Lincoln and the first reader...are well along into the means of their defense. Mr. Lincoln has brought a can along with him and it is placed on the desk as they talk. 1ST READER "We must prepare ourselves thoroughly, this Mr. X. is very crafty." MR. LINCOLN "Need a man be crafty because he speaks the truth. Must I rely on craftiness as you propose when the truth will exonerate me." 1ST READER "You over-rate truth...it's weak medicine in a pragmatic world." MR. LINCOLN "All my life I have relied on truth and it has worked well for me." 1ST READER "If the truth were known about you...you would not recognize yourself. No successful politician, as you have been, has ever relied, and succeeded on espousing the truth." MR. LINCOLN "In all things I have acted as my conscience dictated." 1ST READER "Well said, but indeed, you don't know your conscience: besides this hearing is not one to discover your conscience.
