Student Services, Facilities, Organizations and Activities This section of the Student Handbook lists, locates and briefly describes the many diverse services, facilities, organizations and activities available to University of Iowa students. Generally, knowing where to go and whom to see, about anything from changing majors to participating in poetry readings, is a simple matter of consulting readily accessible sources. The locations and telephone numbers of University offices, the office and home addresses and telephone numbers of University faculty and staff members, and students' University addresses and telephone numbers are listed in the University Directory, which you can buy at the Student Activities Center in the Iowa Memorial Union. If you're uncertain about whom to see regarding an academic matter, inquire at the Registrar's Office, 1 Jessup Hall. If you're looking for help in a University department, ask the departmental secretary. Many University programs, facilities and services—such as housing and financial assistance—are described in pamphlets and brochures available in the Office of Admissions and Registrar, the Office of Public Information, or the appropriate administrative or departmental office. News and announcements of campus events are reported each weekday morning, Tuesday through Saturday, in The Daily Iowan, the U of I student newspaper. The "University Calendar" in The Daily Iowan will keep you posted on times and places of student meetings and special events. The central source of information about student organizations and activities is the Student Activities Center in the lower northeast sector of the Iowa Memorial Union. Most campus organizations are represented at the special Activities Carnival in the Union during September Orientation, and their student representatives are well qualified to answer your questions about their programs, activities, and membership opportunities. Activities chairmen in housing units also can answer questions about activities and organizations, or will refer you to someone who can give you the information you want. You'll have time for participation in only a few of the many organizations and activities open to you at Iowa, but you can satisfy other interests and develop new ones by taking advantage of your opportunities to be a spectator. Your Student Identification Card will admit you to most campus events either without charge, or at special student rates.
