Danforth Chapel on the east campus is available to students through the Iowa Memorial Union Scheduling Office for such uses as group worship, initiation ceremonies, and weddings. (See "Religious Organizations" under "Student Organizations and Activities") Study Abroad The Graduate Office (4 Old Capitol), Dean of Academic Affairs (101 Jessup), and various language department offices (Schaeffer and Gilmore Halls) have information for students interested in studying abroad. Tickets for Campus Events Tickets for most campus events are distributed at the Union Box Office in the south lobby of the Iowa Memorial Union. Tickets to University athletic events and to some other programs are distributed at the Athletic Ticket Office at the east entrance of the University Fieldhouse. STUDENT DEVELOPMENT CENTER Iowa Memorial Union (Lower east wing) Having basic responsibility for the welfare and personal interest of students, the Student Development Center coordinates student organizations and activities, program planning and governing of these areas, and provides services from related student services areas. In the Center are trained programmers working with student organizations including fraternities, sororities, Union Board, and Student Senate; developing leadership training, human relationships and information programs; and providing information about orientation and general student interests. The Center is in a state of development, and its services will be further defined during the coming year. DEAN OF STUDENTS Iowa Memorial Union (Pentacrest Room) The Dean of Students hears and follows through on problems and grievances expressed by individual students, and responds to personal visits and requests from parents of students and to inquiries about and requests for institutional letters of reference. The Dean of Students maintains information about University regulations affecting students. He also maintains a list of resources which might be utilized by students who encounter legal difficulties. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS AND ACTIVITIES Student Activities Center Iowa Memorial Union (lower north) The Student Activities Center houses the offices of major student organizations, and of six program advisers available to students for consultation regarding the strengthening of existing University-recognized student organizations or the formation of new ones. For use by all University-recognized student organizations, the Center provides typewriters, duplicating equipment, desk and office space (for which a small fee is charged), meeting and work areas, mailboxes, business telephones, and a receptionist and answering service. It also maintains an information file covering all University-recognized student organizations. Athletics and Recreation INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS Through its schedule of Big Ten and non-conference competition in football, basketball, wrestling, track and field, baseball, cross country, swimming, gymnastics, fencing, golf, and tennis, the University offers an excellent program of intercollegiate athletics. A 16-member faculty, student and alumni Board in Control of Athletics is responsible for the operational policies of the program. INTRAMURAL PROGRAMS Coed Intramurals The Men and Women's Intramural Program offers organized activity in football and volleyball. Intramural Sports for Men 111 Fieldhouse An extensive program of competitive and recreational sports is provided for all interested male students. Groups from residence halls and campus organizations participate in thirty team sports and activities. Women's Recreation Association (WRA) W114 Women's Gym The WRA provides for intramural competition in a variety of sports, and for the activities of several sports clubs. Men students participate in WRA mixed golf and volleyball, and in the social dance club. SPORTS AND RECREATION ORGANIZATIONS Dance Theatre Women's Gym All students are invited to audition for Dance Theatre, which performs two concerts a year on campus and many off campus. Its programs include all theatrical dance forms. Auditions are conducted at the beginning of the semester. For further information see Marcia Thayer, director. Dolphin Club The Dolphin Club is a national honorary swimming fraternity which promotes aquatic sports and water safety activities. Membership is open to freshmen and varsity swimming and gymnastics team candidates, and to other students who qualify by participating in specified events. The Dolphin Show is a traditional feature of Homecoming. Hawkeye Cheerleaders University cheerleading squad membership is open both to men and to women. Interested students may attend an instructional clinic conducted in the spring. Candidates are judged following the clinic. For further information, inquire at the Student Activities Center. Judo Club Anyone affiliated with the University who is interested in judo and owns a regulation judo costume may join the Judo Club, whose purpose is to foster the sport through instruction, practice and competition. 8
