178. JANUARY 13, 1908. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. THE HURLEYS:- 8 min. F. S. On at 7:10. 3 shows:-The woman is the best part of the act, bring rather pretty and having a superb figure and performs feats of strength rather than skill. However, received good applause. Work entirely on the mat. Closing feat got strong hand.- RENNIER & GOURDIER, S. & D.:- 12 min. in 2. 3 shows. On at 7:18? (Close in one). Two rather pretty girls with fair voices. Three changes of costume. Act suffers a little because of a faded selection of songs. The dancing of Rennier is far above the average. Received small hand after each selection. Closed fair after duo-dancing in one. The new girl in the act is very much of a novice.- MARTINETTIE & SYLVESTER, Comedy acro:- 10 min. F. S. 2 shows. On at 7:36. Advance hand. These men have profited by Rice and Prevost and every other mat, table and chair knockabout act in the business. It is gallery act and caught the top-heavy crowd strong. The acrobatic work of the straight man is very good and the funny falls of the comedian got uproarous laughter. I think that because they were Philadelphia boys they went stronger than they otherwise would have done. However, they work swift and skilfully. It would be a "go" anywhere. JOE FLYNN, "The Man Behind the Book":- 18 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 7:46 Good advance hand. Well known on the Circuit. Great line of parodies and amusing witticisms. Got a good many laughs and strong applause at the finish with encore and curtain call. MR. & MRS. FREDERIC VOELKER, Violinist:- 17 min. F. S. 2 shows. On at 8:04. Advance hand. this is a high-class musical act and as our patrons are particularly fond of good music, each number won a strong hand. Voelker's violin work is brilliant and dashing,- just the sort that is required in a Vaudeville house. Mrs. Voelker makes a very pretty picture at the piano, though showing only a small percentage of her talents. It is a good act decidedly.- MIGNONETTE KOKIN, S. & D.;- 12 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:21. This act caught the house. Miss Kokin is not a pretty woman, but she sings well and dances remarkably. The novelty of the act consisted of a drop with moving pictures, showing her in her dressing-room making the three changes of costume. Her music hall song got five curtain calls. This act would make good anywhere.- JOE MAXWELL & CO? "A Night in a Police Station":- 22 min. F.S. Close in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:33. Twelve people. This is a very good sketch, full of novelty, some bright lines and excellent singing. The act has been described from New York. It is well balanced as to talent. The audience was well pleased with it and gave good applause. The Sextette from Lucia got good applause. Finish in one got encore and curtain call. HAWTHORNE & BURT, "And I Laughed":- 14 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:55. Advance hand. Well known act. Brought a new lot of material, all of which was very laughable and won the house. The eccentric dancing is not one of the least amusing features of this act and works up to an uproarous finish finish which is now so familiar to Americans. Big applause after each one of the feats, and an immense closing hand with two curtain calls. KINETOGRAPH:- SWEDISH SPORTS:- Beautiful travel film, interesting and timely,- WHEN THE DEVEIL DRIVES:- An excellent comedy film.- REEDHMAN GIRLS' DRILL:- O.K. film. ALTOGETHER the KINETOGRAPH is up to the standard and a little more. This films can be recommended anywhere.- HENRY & YOUNG, "Loneville Jollier":-17 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 6:43. This is a western act, dealing with an athletic, brezzy Western widow (who is town-editor, land-boomer, and manicuriste) and a tumble-down actor, who is looking for a where-with-all to reach the next town, and who finally discovers in her an old school mate. Would just about get by in an obscure spot. CHARLES HOWISON, Whistler:- 10 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 7:00. This man has a good whistling faculty which he utilizes cleverly to imitate various birds, but when it comes to accompany songs, after the first two or three minutes it become monotonous, having no pitch in consonance with piano. GENERAL REMARKS:- This is an excellent bill from every standpoint. There is a touch of the serious, plenty of high and low comedy and a good balance of fillin-in matter with a little of high-class music. In point of variety could not be excelled and press & public thoroughly suited. No doubt but it will being strong business. N.A. says: "Mr. Chapin is the one Vaudeville classic
