207 FEBRUARY 3rd, 1908. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. MAYBELLE MEEKER, Voc. & acro:- 10 min. in 2, 3 shows. On at 7:12. Very pretty girl who has a neat little act. Opens with a dance in long skirts which goes fairly well, then proceeds to contortion work on the mat which got good applause. Varied her act a little from her last appearance here, but to its improvement. THREE MITCHELLS, Col. S. & D.:- 14 min. Open in 2, close in 1, 3 shows. this act has gone back in some respects, but, from other standpoints it is improved since last appearance here. The woman not only sings the same selections, but appeared to be in bad form. The vocal numbers of the act and the comedy are shy, but the piccaninny made up with some very clever wooden-shoe dancing, and the man finished with some good acrobatic dancing that was strongly applauded. These saved the act. KARTELLI, Wire-act:- 10 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 7:42. This man on the slack-wire is truly novel. He performs various feats, some of which are nothing short of marvellous. He rolls skates over the wire, rides a unicycle, stands on his head, and does it all with grace and assurance. His balancing on one hand and his twirling of hoops while on the wire get big hands. This act is worthy of a good spot on the bill. THOMAS J. QUIGLEY, Illus. Songs:- 12 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 7:52. Advance hand. Quigley is a song favorite here in Philadelphia. Got good applause all the way through. MR. & MRS. MARK MURPHY, "The Coal Strike":- 24 min. F.S. On at 8:04. Good advance hand. Well known on the Circuit and about the same as when presented here before. Introduced some new bright lines. The laughs were constant throughout and the finish good. DANKMAR SCHILLER TROUPE, Acro:- 14 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 8:28. Three boys and three girls, with Dad in attendance. this is a very novel and expert athletic act. They do a lot of the regulation stunts of head- and hand balancing, walking up steps, head-to-head, and a good many feats that remind one of the Uessems and other acts of that nature. Much applause for excellent work. Closed very well two curtain calls. LADDIE CLIFF, Eng. Com:- 15 min. in 1. 2 shows. On at 8:42. There was never a stronger hit in this house than his. He is an artist in voice, gesture, manner in fact from every standpoint. From the very first he got them strong and held them up to one of the biggest finishes I ever saw here. Seven curtain calls and then compelled to make a little speech, which by the way, he did very neatly. His selections of songs are typically English, but he has a way with him that would carry him with any audience. Press very flattering. FOY & CLARK, "Spring of Youth":- 22 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 8:57. Will Cressy knows what the gallery wants and gives it to them. This sketch is a little rough in spots and at times just escapes being objectionable. Reminds one a great deal of Hoy's knock-about comedy. The laughs were top-heavy but were constant through the latter half of the act. The finish with the monkey is very funny, and brought down the house. On at 7:00. This is a good little act, although they are no longer kids as they advertise themselves. The girl is particularly fetching in becoming costume. They sing well. GENERAL REMARKS:- This is a very strong show. VESTA VICTORIA is making good and LADDIE CLIFF is a surprise with our crowd. Business is big and will doubtless remain so for the balance of the week.
