165 CRITICISM OF SHOW. KEITH'S NEW THEATRE, PHILA. OCT. 3RD. BARR & EVANS-ER-3-Man and woman. Well known comedy sketch in which the man does some tumbling in "rube" makeup, and the woman dressed in outrageously large hoop skirts. No harm for an early place in the three show section. 14 mins. C.D.F. in 3. DUDLEY & CHESLYN-KR-3-Man and woman. Open with a song, then the woman tells some Irish stories and sings a coon song. Finish with a duet. Straight singing act with the exception of a few stories. Cannot see why Pittsburg called it a song and dance act, as there is not a bit of dancing in the act. Good three show act. 14 mins. in one. VONTELLO & NINA-KR-3- Man and woman. Ring act. Not as good or as finished an act as the Zarnes. However, received some applause in spots, and is a good sight act for the three show section. 10 mins. Gar. in 4. OLSEN BROS.-NH-3-Banjoists. Straight banjo playing. Good three show time filler. Went very well for a small act. 12 mins. in one. H. V. FITZGERALD-GRR-3-Quick change artist. This man carries on a dialogue with himself, making quick changes behind a screen to impersonate the characters that are supposed to be talking. Has improved since last here, but still his makeup is so imperfect that the stage has to be kept in semi-darkness. Good for three show section. 13 mins. Gar. in 4. MUSICAL AVOLOS-YRR-2-Two men and two women. Xylophone musical act, all working straight. They did not want to work in one, but were finally persuaded. Very good act of the kind. They are experts on the instrument. So far, the applause hit. 11 mins. in one. CLEMENT DE LION-GRR-2-Billiard ball manipulator, working somewhat like T. Nelson Downs--only much better. Without a question of doubt the greatest billiard ball and card manipulator that has ever played the house. His billiard ball work is marvelous. 11 mins. Pal. 3 CLIFF GORDON-GHR-2-Dutch monologue. Did not use his special drop in one representing the U.S. Senate. Has some good stuff, and went very well at 2.30. Very good monologue. 17 mins. in one. LE ROY & CLAYTON-YRR-2-Man and woman, sketch, entitled "Hogan of the Hansom." Little action until the end; mostly talk; rather a quiet affair, but if got some laughs in spots. A good act, if not on too late. 26 mins. C.D.F. in 3. GERMINAL-YRR-2-Vocalist. Baritone. Dresses as a French peasant, in slouch hat and corduroy. Possesses a wonderfully strong baritone voice, and knows how to use it. A very good act. 9 mins. in one. MLLE. CHESTER & DOG-GHR-2-A living picture act on a small scale. The woman and dog pose in a gold frame, masked with plush, similar to that used in the Art Studies. Act is named "Pictures of the Hunt." The dog is a beautiful animal, and all the pictures are excellently posed. 8 mins. Spec. Set. IRVING JONES-Grr-2-Real coon shouter, story teller and comedian. Went very well, but think the Four Avolos will do better down here. Jones has a good act, and has some new stuff. 18 mins. in one. Wm. HARCOURT & CO.-MHR-2-Sketch, entitled "A Dakota Widow." Two women and a man. The dialogue and action of the sketch revolve around a suit for divorce. There is comedy in the sketch, in spots, and some real good laughs. Was well received by the audience with laughter, but little applause. Good act, with a poor finish. 21 mins. Fancy in 4.
