204 NEW YORK CRITICISM: OCTOBER 31st, 1904: HERBERT BROOKS: GRR-3: 17 minutes: Young man card manipulator, closing with an illusion. Some of his card tricks are exceptionally well executed. He makes a good appearance, and his work is clean. His illusion is well done, in fact, is good as any we have ever had here. The act is excellent for an early place on the bill. EARL & WILSON: GYH-3: 14 minutes: Man and woman in a musical comedy. They have a lot of new material which contains numerous laughs. The act went good. BIOGRAPH:- 20 minutes: "Sortie of the Russian Fleet, Port Arthur", showing the miniature size war ships as shown at the St. Louis Exposition. Good. "A Drama in the Air", showing the balloon ascending, pictures taken from the balloon, various panorama scenes, descending in a parachute, rescue, etc., Good novel film. "The Quarrelsome Washerwoman". Comedy. Good. "The Lost Child". 3rd week. Went fully as strong as last week. POWELL'S MARIONETTES: YRR-2: 14 minutes: The act is similar to Holden's. The general fitting up of the act is great. While Holden uses more figures than this man, Holden's is not as novel. Powell introduces Russian and skirt dances with stereopticon views thrown on the costumes, which has never been seen here. The act closes with a transformation scene, in which he introduces a fountain with colored lights, making a very pretty picture. It is exceptionally strong act. ADA ARNOLDSON: AR-3: 11 minutes: Swedish vocalist: This young woman, while she has a very pleasing personality her voice is not as strong, does not possess that strong range as when last here. Those in the back rows could hardly hear her. GIRARD & GARDNER: YHR-2: 28 minutes: Man and woman presenting the comedy "Dooley and the Diamond", in which Girard portrays the character of the "Cop". This act has been greatly improved, both in lines, new bits of business and laughs. It went fully as strong as before, if not better, he having the first chance on the bill to make them laugh and they certainly appreciated the act. PEWITT: GHR-2: "The Man with the Mysterious Face". The act has been all over the circuit, and extended criticism is not necessary. While the act is novel it failed to impress the audience. Have changed the entire show around, giving his a better place, which may make it more successful. SISTERS GILLETT: AH-3: 14 minutes: Two young women, working in blackface, with a few stories and a little singing. While the act is good for the three-a-day section it was lost down in this spot this afternoon. The re-arranging of the show will help them greatly. MARCEL'S BAS RELIEFS: HRR-2: 18 minutes: An excellent attraction for and a relief from regular vaudeville. Every picture was strongly applauded. AL. H. BURTON: SH-3: 15 minutes: Singing and talking comedian. This man's material is all new. Although he has a very bad enunciation he managed to hold down this place in good shape.
