228 Cleveland Show, week of March 26th, '06. (H. A. Daniels.) DELMORE & ONEIDA---Man and woman in their well known Japanese perch [act]. This is a bad act to open with, because, they work in one, and [owing] to the construction of the house, there are at least 200 people [that] cannot see a thing. Do the same act they have always done. These [???] acts should not be booked in this theatre. 10 min. Drop in one. MR. & MRS. MARK MURPHY---Man and woman. Comedy sketch "The Coal [Strike]." I have seen this act go much better than it did today. It [started] off well, but did not hold out. The woman cannot sing, and her [musical] efforts greatly mar the act. They worked hard and received some applause in spots, but were not an awful hit. C.D.F. in 3. 24 min. THERESE DORGEVAL---French soprano. She is quite a warbler. In fact she went as well as any vocalist that I have heard in this theatre. However, there was a rush for the smoking room as soon as she made her appearance, for we have a lot of "wise" young men who visit this theatre every Monday afternoon, and they do not like vocalists. 9 min. drop in one. KNIGHT BROS. & SAWTELLE--2 men and a woman. From indications this afternoon, this is a greatly over-rated act. They cannot sing for sour apples, and their comedy is bad. The dancing carries the act, and they did get applause on this portion of their work. They seem to impress the audience as having an exalted opinion of their ability, and were it not for their dancing, this fact would land them up in the opening spot on the bill. 16 min. Full Stage. VAN RIENE---Famous 'Cellist. Received some advanced applause, and is sure to please all the music lovers. However, Cleveland is not a musical town, and this feature as the only head-line act will not draw one cent during the week. Up to this point the show has been very weak, and I doubt very much if this man can overcome the short comings of those that precede him. Very good act. Drop in one. 11 min. CHARLES BURKE & GRACE LA RUE--Assisted by two colored people. The very same act that used to be Burke, La Rue and The Inky Boys-----only the inky boys have grown up. They now call the act the "Outside Inn." Quite a good act, but not a feature, although it is the feature spot on the bill. Closed to strong applause. C.D.F. 23 min. GEORGE MONROE--Of "My Aunt Bridget" fame. Complained of his place on the bill, but as he is getting as much money as any other act on the bill, he will probably stay where he is. He started off quite well, but dragged his act out until every one seemed glad to have him go. I have seen him go much better than he did here today. 19 min. drop in one. PEKIN ZOUAVES--Their vocal efforts are not only bad, but rotten. I have cut out their solo work entirely. Their drilling is the best I have ever seen. Received Deserved applause, and closed strong. Very good act. 12 min. Full Stage. KINETOGRAPH--- Peashooter Prize winners at the dog show. Moose hunt Ski running Shave by installments All good. COMMENTS--For a high-priced show, it is about the worst combination that I have had in the house this season. The show costs a great deal more than that of last week, and yet it is not as good a show by 100%. It looks well on paper, but when you come to play it off, it does not run well, and there is not a feature in it that would attract unusual attention.
