240 New York Criticism--April 9th, 1906. HARRY CALVO: This man works in full dress making a pleasing appearance. Billed as the man with the phenomenal voice. Gives a double voice solo at the piano and a few little imitations. Manages to secure a good lot of applause. Act is alright about second or third on the bill, and I presume it would be quite novel in the other Keith houses. 10 min. in two. Can work in one- 2 shows KLEIN & KLEIN: Pantomime Clown Juggling and Magic act. On account of the delay in securing the trunks, compelled to use this act after the Kinetograph. They do a neat act with a little bit of novelty to it. Work quick, got some good laughs and some of their material is new. Excellent opening act. 12 min. full stage- 3 shows ST. JOHN & LeFEVRE: Improved somewhat. Appeared to have more life and ginger in their work. A good three-show act. 11 min. in one- 3 shows BARLOW & NICHOLSON: Man and woman in an alleged comedy sketch portraying the characters of a soubrette and tramp. Does not amount to much. Will open the show with them to-morrow. 18 min. full stage-3 shows CARROLL & BAKER: Hebrew Dancing Comedians. This act was the applause hit of the show up to this time. All their work scored immensely,-dancing being their stronghold. A mighty valuable three-show act. Should be booked immediately over the circuit. 12 min. in one- 2 shows THE VADARES: Six young ladies in a cycle act. The girls appeared to be nervous, making several errors. Received some little applause for their work. Act looks like "30 cents" alongside of the Six Proveanies. Bicycling is an also "ran" for this house, unless they are top notches. 12 min. full stage- 2 shows SAILOR & BARBARETTO: Man and woman in a neat little singing act. Both make a very good appearance with fairly good voices. Seemed to please immensely in this place. 9 min. in one- 3 shows 4 MUSICAL AVOLOS: All selections strongly applauded. Greatest xylophone soloists we ever had. Compelled to encore. 12 min. in one FELIX, BARRY & BARRY: In their comedy:-"The Boy Next Door." The Company is Emily Barry. Act is a continuation of their old sketch. Scored the first strong laugh of the afternoon. Felix made a big hit with his acrobatic work. Compelled to take several bows on the finish. 26 min.-full stage LEW HAWKINS: Too hard going down here for this man. His parodies are good and some of his material is new, although some is so old and done so often, that I may request him to cut it. Left the stage to a very little applause. 13 min. in one MAX WELSON TROUPE: Only three members to this troupe instead of four as we have played on previous occasions. Description of the act is not necessary, as their work is well known. Received continual applause throughout. 12 min.-full stage KINETOGRAPH: "Living Flowers." Good photographically "School Boys' Conspiracy" Very good "From Cairo to the Pyramid." Very interesting "Robbers robbed." Good
