(F. J. O'Connor) Boston Show, Week of April 16, 1906 Overture, 10 min.--Selections from "King Dodo". The Zarnes, 3 shows, 10 min. full stage--Man and woman, on the flying rings and trapeze. Well-known on the circuit. About a passable act in this spot for a continuous house, and did not get any amount of applause. Bell Boy Trio, 3 shows, 12 min. in 1--Three young men, in bell boy costume, singers and dancers, with a little whistling by one of them. Their concerted work amounts to very little, and the dancing lets them out. Just about passed in this spot. Claude Frederick and Pony "Don", 3 shows, 14 min. full stage--A local aspirant, exhibiting a pretty little pony who cannot help appealing to children. More than the regulation "stunts" in acts of this kind and appealed strongly to the woman and children in our audience to-day. would consider it a very good act for the 3-show section. Carroll and Baker, 3 shows, 13 min. in 1--Two men, one working straight, and the other in eccentric makeup, Hebrew comedian, singers and dancers. Their talk does not amount to much, but this house, but their dancing is all right. Good 3-a-day act. DeMar and Fortune, 2 shows, 16 min. open in 3, close in 1--In the singing skit, "My Sweetheart" Has been described from Providence Miss DeMar's saving grace is her liveliness on the stage, and Fortune has quite a fair voice but liable to flat. As a whole the act is very ordinary and could hardly be used lower than this spot with us here. The Great LaFayette, 2 shows, 22 min. full stage--I have divided his act this week, the first part consisting of the Protean changes and the second the Travesty Band. The changes completely mystified the audience who seemed to sit with their mouths open, but at that, he did not score any tremendous hit. Perhaps it may have been due to his early place on the bill. Tonight we will move him down. william Tomkins, 2 shows, 13 min. in 1--Nice appearing chap, who has a monologue quite different from anything we have seen yet. He started off rather slow today, which can partly be attributed to a dull audience. I expect to see him go all right tonight. Cut "I haven't seen your wife's last baby". Byers and Herman, 2 shows, 12 min. full stage--Contortionists and wire artists. One of the men is the best contortionist we have had here for some time, and the other is quite clever on the wire. Went with applause throughout in this spot today, and closed to a good hand, although, I can't think this contortion work appeals strongly to our audience. as bad as last year. Kinetograph, 3 shows, 20 min. in 1--Showing the following list of pictures: 1. Please Help the Blind. Good comedy 2. A Bird's Eye View of Paris. Interesting 3. I've Lost My Eye Glass. Good comedy 4. The Juvenile Elephant Trainer. Interesting to children Newman and Knowles, 3 shows, 15 min. open in 3, close in 1--Two women, in a singing specialty introducing a couple of imitations. They both sing several songs but neither of them have a voice that would commend itself to the Opera. Their choice of songs helped considerably Comment:- The show is lacking in comedy, being without a good strong laugh until we get to Barrows-Lancaster Co. Individually, the majority of the acts are all right in their position, but those representing the comedy division are not of sufficient mirthprovoking qualities to make it a good show. Tonight LaFayette took occasion to make exception to some of the advertising claiming that he was to be the feature and the only feature according to his contract. 'Tis another case of performer has copy of contract, which is of a special order, and the house has none. I have had to ask his permission to see the contract in order to find out where the house stands.
