CRITICISM OF PHILADELPHIA SHOW, JAN. 16TH '05. H A. DANIELS. ARMINTA & BURKE-KR-3-Man and woman. Fixed aerial ladder, swinging trapeze and horizontal bars. Man attempts the comedy--and it is pathetic. If he worked straight it would add 100% to the act. All right for the price and three shows. 10 mins. Gar. in 4. ADD HOYT-Hr-3-Blackface comedian. He can't sing. Monologue is bad. Cut out story of woman with dropsy, also story of the pin. His jokes are old--and most of them bad. Not a very good act. 13 mins. in one. CHICK--HR-3-Tramp cyclist. A bargain at the price. Did a good three show act. Mark him for a return sometime. 11 mins. Gar. in 4. HATHAWAY & WALTON-KR-3-Boy and girl, high class singing and dancing act. Very good dancers. Neatly dressed act, and a good one for three shows. The boy is as good a dancer as John Ford. 9 mins. in one. OWLEY & RANDALL-ER-3-Man and woman. Juggling sketch "Tumbling Tom." All right act for the three show division. Got some laughs in spots--and managed to break a lot of crockery. 10 mins. C.D.F. in 3 CAREW & HAYES-GYH-3-Two girls, singing and dancing specialties, ending with a recitation "The Derby Race." The act should have been placed up the line about three notches. Just fair for three shows, if on very early. This is too stiff a place for them. 18 mins. Spec. in one. MR. & MRS. JIMMY BARRY-GHR-2-Have some new work in their sketch. Have improved a great deal since last here. Their work has that little artistic touch that is hard to explain, but which the audience is quick to recognize. Went very well, indeed. 21 mins. C.D.F. in 3. Close in one. JENNIE YEAMANS-GRR-2-As fresh as ever. Didn't get a hand on her entrance, so she stopped and said: "What's the matter, is there anyone here that knows me?" However, she went fairly well after she got started--as she usually does--and her "jollying" the orchestra extracted some laughs and won some applause. Good act. 15 mins. in one. WATERBURY BROS & TENNEY-YHR-2-Three men. Musical comedy act, well known on the circuit. A good act. The music and comedy both went well. 19 mins. C.D.F. in 3. Close in one. BROWN & NEVARRO-GYH-2-Direct from Europe, with entire new wardrobe. The best colored act we play. They do Italian and Chinese specialties that are very good. Very good act. 13 mins. Spec. in one. MARY DUPONT & CO.-GNH-2-Man and woman, comedy sketch "A Leap Year Leap." A little love sketch depicting the troubles of a bashful lover. Quite a good comedy sketch. Went quite well, but should have been on half hour earlier. 18 mins. C.D.F. in 3. FRANK BUSH-YRR-2-Well known monologue. Always goes well here. Had some new stories and kept them laughing continuously. Very good. 18 mins. in one. WENTWORTH'S HORSES-MHR-2-Two white horses, one woman, two men and a dog cart. A real circus act and a good one. The fancy bareback riding is excellent. 10 mins. Spec. Set in 5. sketch "No. 973." COMMENT:-The show is slow and lifeless. It will need a whole lot of doctoring to fix it up so that it will appear to have some life. Evans is so sick he can hardly walk on the stage, and Dupont and the Dunbars fell down. Then three of the three show acts are really in the wrong house.
