149. HARLEM OPERA HOUSE CRITICISM OCTOBER 29th, 1906 R. G. LARSEN ALEXIS & SCHALL: Went very well. The contortionist getting a hand right along. 12 min.-full stage-can work in two- 3 shows DURAND TRIO: In one, only ran seven minutes. They were about fair. They might have done better lower down in the bill. JUGGLING MATTHIEU: Used all his old stuff, but it seemed to go very well indeed with the audience. 14 min. in one- 3 shows THOS. MEEGAN & CO: In the sketch:-"On the Q.T." Went fairly well, Meegan seemed to be the whole show. 25 min.-full stage- 3 shows TOM MOORE: Did his usual coon shout and was very well received. He ran 13 minutes and could have been on longer. 3 shows COUNT DeBUTZ & BROTHER: Coming after Mosher, Houghton & Mosher, who made one of the hits of last week, this comedy cycle act were at a decided disadvantage, although the act is a good one and pleased the audience. 12 min.-full stage- 2 shows JACK WILSON & CO: In:-"An Upheaval in Darktown." Made a decided hit. Wilson's parodies on popular songs went remarkably well. 22 min. in one- 2 show WILLIS FAMILY: These people were also at a disadvantage, as they followed the Musical Cuttys, who made a big hit last week. Nevertheless they Willis Family has a pleasing act and they were liberally applauded. 19 min. open in two-closed full stage EDWARDS DAVIS & CO: In the dramatic sketch:-"The Unmasking." Proved a very strong feature. It was very well put on and seems just the kind of an act to satisfy such audiences as we are playing to. 20 min. open in 2-cl-f. s. NORA BAYES: This woman was hardly up to expectations, but there is no doubt that she will go better with the evening audience. 13 min. in one LaVINE-CIMARON TRIO: Substituted for Lowell & Lowell. Kept the audience going in good shape, the acrobatic work being of the highest order. Comedy more than usually bright for this kind of an act. 11 min.-full stage WINSOR McCAY: The reception received by Mr. McCay proved conclusively that he was well known in Harlem and each of his sketches were instantly recognized and applauded. While his clever series of sketches from Youth to Old Age met with decided approval, the audience seemed more pleased with the old familiar friends such as "Little Nemo", "Sammy Sneeze" and HASSAN BEN ALI'S TOOZOONIN ARABS--- This act made the usual terrific hit and is just as good, if not better than ever. There was no end to the applause, and instead of a lot of people leaving the usual acrobatic act I do not think 10 people left their seats. The finish was a scream. 12 minutes full stage. KINETOGRAPH --- "A few pranks of Satan"-- Very uninteresting--- Will change. NOTE--- This is one of the best all-round shows we have had for some time, but a very difficult on to work. We had two waits filled in by Orchestra of 1 1/2 minutes and 1 3/4 minutes, which I will rectify to-night. LINDSAY MORISON.
