173 HARLEM OPERA HOUSE CRITICISM November 19th, 1906 E.F ROGERS BROOKS & VEDDER: In the German comedy sketch:-"The New Housemaid." Made an exceptionally good opening. They have considerable new stuff. 19 min.-full stage-close in one-3 shows GALLANDO: Clay Modeler. Very ancient. Just about got by in this place. 12 min. in two-3 shows JULIET WINSTON: Didn't do much more than get by. Her voice was at times lost, and she seemed to lack the ability to hold her audience. 10 min. in one-3 shows D'CHUNT'S DOGS: There is nothing sensational in this act. Merely a pleasing little opening act. Man uses a staircase with three bull terriers. Well trained. He is quite a clever equilibrist. With the aid of the dogs and various stunts, it develops into a fairly good three-show act. This place on the bill was down a little too far for him this afternoon. Will change this at the night performance. 9 min. full stage ED GRAY: Evidently known here. Received a good hand on his appearance. Held the audience well and might have stayed longer. 15 min. in one- 3 shows SHARP BROTHERS: Do a very neat blackface act. Dressed well and danced well. They went big for this place in the bill. 12 min. in two- 2 shows BROWN, HARRIS & BROWN: They went strong from the start and held the attention of the audience unto the finish of the act. 26 min.-full stage-closed in one- 2 shows CAMERON & FLANAGAN: In their comedy sketch:-"On and Off." This is sort of a novelty. The boys worked in blackface in one and did a little dancing and a little talk, etc. Scene then changes to the interior of a dressing room. They do a lot of quarreling, which is really funny to the audience, while they change to whiteface. Just a wee bit of ethos in the act; and then give an exhibition of their original stunt as a finish, consisting of singing and acrobatic dancing? The novelty of the act appealed immensely to the audience, and I presume it will hold its own on the circuit. The opening of the act conflicts a little with Sharp Brothers, altho this is forgotten later. Open in one 6 mins. and closed full stage about 12 minutes- 2 shows JAMES J: MORTON: Went big with his usual line of talk. Laughing hit of the show. 14 min. in one GLOBE OF DEATH Went strong. 10 min. KINETOGRAPH: "Tomato Stealing" Good "The Troubadour" A Trick Picture "Mother-In-Law" Good comedy
