20. FEB. 18, 1907. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. G.E.BARNS. BRUCE & BAGNEAU, Singers & Dancers:-12 min. In 1, close in 2. 3 shows. On at 6:18.- Two young women, appearing in three changes of costume, all of which are effective. They sing fairly well and each one of their songs get some applause. The closing Indian song, in which they disappear in a canoe, won the best hand of all, though nothing enthusiastic. Just about held an early three-a-day place. HENRY & YOUNG, Com. & Sing:- 15 min.in 3, close in 1. 3 shows. On at 6:30. Man and woman. This is a worthless act. There is neither humor, music nor originality in it. The costuming is grotesque, but the work is most mediocre and trite. Understand these people have been travelling with a Medicine Show that soon busted up. No wonder. It is to be hoped that another will be originated for their benefit, for that's where they belong HARRY JOLSON, Blackface Com:- 15 min. in 1. 3 shows. On at 6:45. Good black face act. His material is up-to-date, and somewhat on the lines of George Evans, but none the worse for that. Almost anywhere in the three-a-day section will do. THE FELOTS, Juggling & Acro.:-17 min. F.S., close in 1. 3 shows. On at 7:00. Man and woman. This is a good three-a-day act. The stage represents a hotel office. The woman works straight and the man eccentric. The talk is amusing, and the stunts include everything from acrobtic work to burlesque magic and juggling. There were many scattered laughs throughout the act, and the close was good. Makes a very acceptable act, preferably for an opener. LUCIA & VIATA.Wire Specialty:- 8 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 7:17. Two women. This is a beautiful act. The women are shapely, well costumed, and make a stunning appearance. Their wire work is interesting from the start to finish and won applause throughout, with a big close and a curtain call. Too bad not to get this act on later, but owing to the Holiday bill it is impossible. It belongs much farther down the line in the two-a-day section, - say about 8:30. FRED WATSON & MORRISSEY SISTERS, Singing & Dancing:- 14 min. F.S. close in 1 2 shows. On at 7:29. These people made a genuine silk-stocking hit.The girls make three changes of costume, and all of them are very stunning, even if a little bit extreme. The songs are all new, and each received a strong hand. Close was immense, with two curtain calls. A bald-headed feature, but none the worse for that. MR. & MRS. GENE HUGHES. "Suppressing the Press":- 21 min. F.S. 2 shows. On at 7:43. This is a very good sketch. The situation is a new one, and the idea is worked out quite skilfully, with some very bright lines. The motif concerns a man who imagines that he has shot another. Also his wife, who believes she has run down and killed a man while driving her automobile. The parties offended against are in reality one and the same man, the woman's brother, - who is not hurt at all, but who uses every means of illusion to bring them to the verge of histeria. The interest is sustained throughout, and finish was big. The sketch could hold down over a better place. Agreeably disappointed in this act. Found it far better than I expected. To curtain calls. the strictest letter, and worthy of most critical consideration from every standpoint. Gillette has seen that his work is offered to the public with a zealous eye to preserving the initial idea, and so heighten his own fame as a playwright. With all parts of the house the sketch held interest and won admiration. The plot has been retold in other criticisms, so it is only necessary to say that so far as our audience is concerned, the sketch proved, and doubtless will prove, a genuine winner here. We count ourselves very fortunate in having such an admirable headliner to top an otherwise excellent bill for a holiday week. little shifting makes an ideal holiday bill. The newspapers have been very favorable and a still better test is the laudatory spirit of the patrons who have expressed themselves to various members of the house staff in flattering terms. We are sure that every patron who has left the house had become a good advertisement with his or her friends. Whatever the weather conditions, this cannoy fail to be a record-breaking week for this time of the year. FEJ.
