UNION SQUARE CRITICISM---WEEK OF AUG. 12th, 1907. VIOLA AND ENGEL. This is a fair act. The Barrel Jumping and the acrobatic work is very good. The comedian is very poor, and has very little comedy work to do in the act. All right to open the show. Went fair. 8 minutes, full stage. Three shows. JULIET WINSTON. This girl has a very good voice, sang three songs all of which went very well. She dresses very neatly and looks very attractive on the stage. For about $50.00 and three shows she is all right. Went very well. 11 minutes in one. LAWRENCE AND HARVEY. I gave this act a trial here about a week ago. There is some very good material in it, and the only fault I had to find is with the people. The woman is absolutely useless. The man is not so bad, and he gives two or three imitations of Geo. M. Cohan and Johnnie Ray etc., all of which went very well. For about $100.00 and three shows it would be all right. Went fair. 22 minutes, full stage, and close in one. Three shows. EARLE AND BARTLETT. This act played here several times, and always seems to make good. It is a good comedy act for about second or third on the bill. Went fair. 15 minutes, full stage. STEVENSON AND NUGENT. These boys do a fair act. Their talking at the opening of the act is fair? The comedian is a very clever dancer, in fact they are both good dancers. A good three a day act. Went fair. 12 minutes in one. Three shows. JUNO SALMO. This fellow does a fairly wonderful act. He is one of the best contortionists I have ever seen. His opening is very good, uses a number of electrical effects which I was forced to cut out on account of the Fire Inspector who said it was dangerous. The act went very well. 12 minutes, full stage. Two shows. JAMES CULLEN. This fellow always makes good. He has some new songs and new material which is good. Went very well. 15 minutes one. GARDNER AND STODDARD. A very good act. They are both very clever people. The woman is exceedingly clever, especially her imitation of Sis Hopkins which she does very well. The act went very well. 20 minutes, full stage. Three minutes close in one. Good. Roller Skating Craze. Very funny. NOTE. The show this week is not as good as it might have been. It lacks comedy. It is impossible to try and get three or four big feature acts merely for the benifit of having something out front on the eight sheet, and I think a few people ought to come down from the office and look at some of these acts and they would be convinced that a good genuine variety show with plenty of comedy and good acts is a 100% better than four or five of these tremendous big acts that do not seem to please the audience, and makes the show cost about $2500 when I can do just as well with a $1800 or $200 show.
