MARCH 16, 1908. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E.BARNS. DE VOIE TRIO, ring-act:- 9 min. F.S. 3 shows. On at 7:18. Three men, making good appearance. Work on rings suspended from horizontal bar. Each one of their feats received applause, and the close was strong. Excellent opening act for any house. LEWIS & GREEN, Comedians:- 17 min. in 2, open and close in 1. On at 7:34. This is a fairly good comedy act. One man works straight, and the other comedy Swede. The Swede sits in the orchestra and butts into the singer's work. The audience is fooled until he joins his partner. The scene changes to two, the interior of a restaurant. The Swede is engaged as cook. Thereupon follows some rough comedy with a steak. The act then goes to one with some parodies which took well with the gallery. Closed well with one curtain call. FIVE MAJORS, Voc:- 14 min. F.S. On at 7:54. This act is all to the merry. The five majors make a superb appearance in English military costumes. Each one of them is a gentleman soloist in his way and they have an excellent selection of songs. One of them is a whistler and bird-imitator, who got good applause for his work, the pianist is one of the best we have had here in a long time. There was good applause throughout. I am sure that the audience could have stood for twice the length of their program. The act will go particularly well with evening audiences. Big applause with two curtain calls. A classy act that needs every encouragement. GASTON & GREEN, Voc:- 20 min. in 1. On at 8:08. Our eminent "Missouri" jury liked this act from the first. The man is a good deal of a natural comedian and dances well. The little girl has really a good voice and is a very dainty comedienne. Closed well with two encores and two curtain calls. JOE WELCH & COMPANY, "At Ellis Island":- 23 min. F.S. On at 3:25. All the good things that have been said about this play were fully justified in the reception of this little masterpiece by our audience to-day. Welch does not impersonate an Italian immigrant--he _is_ it. The part is forceful, convincing and close to truth right from the first. The comedy is good, and of course, the pathos wins the house very strong. The mob of Italians,- (immigrants) which we dug out of Dagotown here, filled the bill splendidly. This is a great Vaudeville act without a doubt. Immense hand at the finish and four curtain calls. All papers highly flattering this morning. It will draw well with us for balance of the week. OTTO BROTHERS, German comedians:- 13 min. in 1. On at 8:50. Advance hand. Gave us a little new material to-day, but the majority of it is the same as presented here before. Made just as much of a hit, however, particularly with the top-heavy house. Big finishing hand with two curtain calls. BESSIE VALDARE TROUPE of Bicyclistes:- 13 min. F.S. On at 9:05. Six girls and a young man. Well known act, and one of the best. The girls are all of them pretty and graceful as well as exceedingly well trained. Each one of the feats got good hand. The finish was very strong for an act of this kind. 14. [Text partially missing, covered by leaf over it; text continues below overleaf:] the present time it is very amateurish and needs a whole lot of work and experience. Received small applause at finish. A small house act at best. GORDON & CHACON, Col. S. & D.:- 14 min. in 1. On at 7:04. An ordinary coon act which can hold only an obscure spot in the three-a-day section. GENERAL REMARKS:- This show is without any falldown, with perhaps the disappointment of SMITH & CAMPBELL who had a hard time to score just a little bit after "Billy's Tombstones". It is strange that these people go so well in some other houses, and yet with us just about managed to hold down a hard spot. It may be that Philadelphians are tired of this fare, but I am as keen on humor as the next man and they cannot get many laughs out of me with that material, however hard they work. THE FIVE MAJORS was a little surprise in excellence and our headliners were all that could be desired. In spite of the fact that there are some strong shows in town, Lent and twenty eight continuous revivals in progress we shall do business
