62 Report on show, Keith's Theatre, Providence, R. I., Week of April 20, 1908. (Chas. Lovenberg, Mgr.) The bill this week is giving the best of satisfaction of any that we have had in a very long time, and to my mind, justly so. It may seem that a number of the acts conflict on account of their appertaining to rehearsals and theatricals, but that is not the case, only in a technical way and on paper. The show blends splendidly, there is lots of good comedy and music and the result was entire satisfaction to two big audiences yesterday, with excellent notices in the papers this morning. Martinez & Martinez. Musical act, instrumental, which did very nicely in this unimportant spot. Couldn't recommend them for anything much stronger than this. Good 3-a-day turn. 15 Min. open in 3, close in 1, on a pinch could do their act in 2, & close in 1, 3 Shows. Tom Bateman. This act was reviewed a few weeks ago when he played only Monday and fell out of the bill through illness. He gave the same satisfaction yesterday. 12 Min. in 1, 3 Shows. Juggling DeLisle. This is a nice, clean little act. To my mind could open the show in almost any of the houses and most valuable from the 3-a-day standpoint. 11 Min. in 1, 3 Shows. Elsie Faye & Co. This act did not pan out quite as good as I looked for, in fact, I think it is rather mediocre. They attempt quite considerable singing and as none of them have voices, that detracts very materially from the act. The dancing is quite good, but it isn't an act, that in a big house, could hold down a position any better than number 2. 13 Min. in 1, 2 Shows. World & Kingston. In exactly the same act they have been giving us for a number of years. No, I apologize, they have two new jokes. In spite of this they went very well yesterday, but I should want to see a complete revision of the act before playing it again. 27 Min. open and close in 1, 2 Shows. Willa Holt Wakefield. With the exception of Cameron & Flanagan this came pretty near being the hit of the show. Miss Wakefield is the best entertainer, at the piano, I have ever seen, man or woman. The Auguste Glose's and others of that ilk all fade into insignificance, compared to this charming woman. She not only sings and plays well, but she is a real comedienne and gets the laughs. She will be welcomed in Providence any time. 12 Min. Full Stage, could work in 2, using Grand Piano, 2 Shows. Cameron & Flanagan. From the laughing standpoint, of course, this was the big thing in the show, and from the view taken by the audience, should have been the "headliner." These young men are entitled to a world of credit for securing a novelty, and a novelty that thoroughly makes good. The biggest kind of a hit. 18 Min. open in 1, close in 3, 2 Shows. La Scala Sextette. In houses that have previously played the Romany Opera Troupe or even the Zingary Co. they are not going to be very well satisfied with the La Scalas. At least two of the members are almost bad, that is the soprano, whose voice is thin and nasal and who sings her high notes decidedly off key, and one of the tenors, who has no voice at all. They have a rather amateurish manner on the stage, with the consequence that it is not thoroughly satisfactory. They got by first rate, and I don't want to give the impression that they won't do, but for the salary paid and following the beautiful singing acts mentioned, they don't class as first-raters. 18 Min. in 1, 2 Shows. Motion Pictures. O. K. Goforth & Doyle. Man and woman, man in blackface, woman, straight. Semi-sketch with some attempt at singing and dancing. Very bad act. I can dig up a better act in Norwich and Southbridge for $50. A WEEK. 18 Min. open in 3, close in 1, 3 Shows.
