75 C.E. Barns [(L)?] Phila Show CRITICISMS. MAY-4th.1908. BILLY CULLEN; 13 min. Street scene in one. On at 5.20 Has one or two good songs and fair line of stories. Something of a local favorite here, closed well with one curtain call. FERREROS & DOG. 12 min. Full Stage. On at 1.45 Rather a novel act. Ferreros in a costume of a clown plays various instruments. His paraphenalia is showman-like. Has a French poodle well trained, doing several tricks such as playing on the bells. The dog got an immense hand after the most difficult one of his tricks. Closed strong with one curtain call. MURPHY & FRANCIS; 18 min. In one. On at 1:57 Man and Woman, colored. Well known Have a good line of coontown material, songs dances and gags. Took the crowd pretty strong. Wound up with a good eccentric dance. Encore and one curtain call. EMIL HOCH & CO. 19 min. Full stage. 2:15 Story of girl who is at odds with her father over her lover. The latter mistakes the father for the butler and thereupon ensues an amusing scene. Some bright lines and a good climax. Applause at the finish with one curtain call. Not as strong a sketch as their former one, but it made good nevertheless. HILL & WHITAKER. 17 min. In one. On at 3.39 Vocalists with harp and banjo. Make a fine appearance and render selections with grace and musicianly assurance. woman has a remarkable contralto voice and plays the harp exceedingly well. Finish well. Finish song got immense applause. Five curtain calls and one encore. Never was coon song as brilliantly rendered as by Miss Whitaker, not even excepting May Brown and Charles Vance. She was a distinct and emphatic hit. HORACE GOLDIN CO. 20 min. Full Stage. On at 2:53 The same act as presented here last week with the exception of a new trunk mystery substituted for the suspended trunk feat. Made his usual hit. Newspapers were very generous to Goldin on Sunday which helped to popularize him this week. A great act. ROSIE LLOYD. 25 min. In one. On at 2:34 Miss Lloyd has neither the personality nor the comedy of her sisters, but she has much more of a voice, makes a girlish picture in each of her four costumes. Good selection of songs. Was well received although she did not create anything of a furor. Will hold her own all right for the balance of the week. ROBERT HILLIARD & CO. 26 min. Full stage. On at 3.56 An excellent play superbly presented, as Hilliard always does, making a strong impression. Well known on the circut. Will draw strong with the orchestra crowds for the balance of the week. Grand finish and three curtain calls. JIM GOT A NEW JOB. A very fair comedy series. GENERAL REMARKS. As the North American said this morning, "For some reason best know to himself, B. F. Keith is putting on a series of bills that are superior to those he presented when he had opposition." This comes pretty nearly telling the story. There was not a single fall-down, and several surprises. Among them may be mentioned HILL & WHITAKER, MCMAHON & CHAPPELLE, and FIELDS & WARD. HILLIARD has perfected his act so that it runs with wonderful artistic precision and leaves a strong impression. The Curzon Sisters simply defy all competitors in their line and all together the bill stands strong in novelty, comedy, and class. The revised bill is as follows:- Keith's Orchestra Ina Claire Ferreros & Dog Murphy & Francis Emil Hoch & Co. Rosie Lloyd Horace Goldin Fields & Ward Curzon Sisters Hill & Whitaker Robert Hilliard McMahon & Chappelle Kinetograph [Rice?] Brothers- Billy Cullen Geraldine McCann Co.
