MAY25-08. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. C.E. BARNS. ILA GRANNON. 10 min., in one. Pretty girl, has a pleasing personality and a dainty voice, although not very strong. Her selection of songs is very happy and the audience liked her. Miss Grannon will certainly develop into a genius in her line if she progresses. She can stand a much better spot on the bill. Strong applause and two curtain-calls at the finish. BARRY & WOLFORD. 14 min., street in one. Good line of songs and parodies which took with our audience. Neither one of them has a particularly good voice, but they held down the spot acceptably. Encore and two curtain-calls at the finish. LOUIS GUERTIN. 11 min., full stage. This is an interesting act and consists of high kicking and broad and high jumping, etc. The act pleased our jury which gave him a good hand after each feat. Made a fine finish. Would be O. K. in a better spot. MAYME REMINGTON & PICKS. 14 min., in one. This act took quite well although Miss Remington seems to have gone back. The "Picks" are the whole thing. They sing well and do dancing and contortion work in five changes of costume. Work hard to please. Good applause at the close and one curtain-call. SNYDER & BUCKLEY. 24 min., full stage. Well known on the circuit. One man works straight and the other Dutch comedy. Play only fairly well a dozen different wind-instruments and have a lot of business that is passable. This act has also gone back since last presentation here. The close was good with two curtain-calls. MC. NAUGHTONS. 16 min., street in one. Second week, same work as before. Rightly placed on the bill and made good. Two curtain-calls. THE FOUR FORDS. 15 min., full stage. Advanced applause. Well known on the circuit. Always make a hit in this house. Carry their own drop, representing Times Square, and a tropical scene. Big applause after each one of their dances and the finish was strong. Three curtain-calls. The best of its kind in the business. BEN WELCH. 17 min., in one. A good deal of his material is the same as delivered here before, but his finishing parodies are new and gave the act a good close. Three curtain-calls. BARNOLD'S DOGS. 9 min., full stage. This act is a good deal like Coin's Dogs but is far better. Work without masters visible presence on stage. The inebriated dog is very funny indeed. Immense hand at the close when the monkey-cop arrests and carries away the canine "Soak" in a patrol-wagon. Barnold was compelled to respond twice. ALICE LLOYD. 29 min., in one. Although this is the second week of Miss Lloyd, it is practically her one and only week for the reason that she only appeared on Monday of last week, and was too ill with throat trouble to work during the balance of the week. Made the same hit as before, and will undoubtedly draw strong for the rest of the week. Quite an ovation at the close. LEW SIMMONS & CHAS. RENTZ. 16 min., C.D.F. The Black-face Comedians. Impossible. THE LA. BELLES. 15 min., full stage. comedy Jugglers and Hoop-Rollers, man and woman. Man works tramp comedy, the woman is daintily dressed and quite expert. The hoop-rolling is the best part of the act. The comedy is rather shy. Close fair. WARNER & LAKEWOOD. 14 min., full stage. The girl appears as soubrette, sings fairly well. The man as a scarecrow does a Fred Stone Eccentric dance which took quite well with the supper crowd. GENERAL REMARKS. A smooth-running show that ought to pull the crowd, even after a rousing big Houdini week. Lloyd, the Fords and the dogs easily took the high honors.
