GRAND OPERA HOUSE, PITTSBURGH, PA. Week SEPTEMBER 1st, 1913. Opening Season, Anniversary Bill. F. ARTUSO Hand balancer and jumper. 8 minutes, full stage. This is a very ordinary opening act. It is probably worth the money we are paying for it. (BALTIMORE) FIELD BROS. Eccentric Dancers and Singers. 9 min. in One. A very good act of its kind. The boys are splendid dancers and get away fairly well with their singing. (COLUMBUS) OLD SOLDIER FIDDLERS. Special drop; full stage; 19 minutes. The same act they gave us before, with the exception of three new members as a quintet. I do not believe there is as much ginger and glow to their performance as there was last season; but nevertheless, the audience liked them and they did not yield to any other act on the bill in the matter of applause. (Open) BURNHAM & IRWIN 14 Minutes in one. "A Song Sketch at the Piano." This is a pleasing number. Mr. Irwin is particularly clever, after the manner of Clifton crawford, and Miss Burnham does a neat little pianologue from the style of Willa Holt Wakefield. (COLUMBUS) HALE & PATTERSON Society Dancers. Full Stage, palace. 8 Minutes. This young man and young woman exemplify the Tango and the Argentino. They have a splendid act and do not transgress the proprieties. This is one of the hits of our bill this week. (Open) VERA MICHELENA. Songs. 9 minutes in one. An attractive performer with good voice and style. She, however, just gets by in this bill and not likely to create a riot anywhere. (BUFFALO) CECIL LEAN & CO. Full stage. 21 minutes. "Acting Songs." Lean is assisted this season by Cleo Mayfield and James Billings. They have all new material and in every respect measure up to the former Lean and Holbrook act. Their closing number, a mock church choir selection, won frequent recalls. (PROVIDENCE) J. FRANCIS DOOLEY and CORINNE SALES 21 minutes in One. By reason of the fact that Miss Sales has discarded her tights and Mr. Dooley has eliminated the double entendre from their dialogue, this act is much more refined, less boisterous and more valuable than in past. Mr. Dooley's fashion of taking the audience into his confidence is immensely amusing and the act may be said to have been the applause hit of this bill. (SYRACUSE) ARTHUR SULLIVAN & CO. In a one act play by Aaron Hoffman entitled, "Straight." 15 minutes; full stage; special set. This is a real find. It is a story of the underworld capitally told and splendidly acted. It holds the audience with tense interest. The dialogue has frequent interruptions of laughter and a unique and comic finale brings down the curtain amidst substantial applause. (Open) He got our audience strong with his William Service's recitation, "The Lure of the Yukon" and finished big with "Gungadin." (BOSTON) THE CASTILLIANS Posing Art Models. 9 minutes; full stage. A series of studies of art masterpieces in bronze. Almost too realistic for belief, and in consequence, less appreciated than they really deserve. It is the best posing act of the sort we have ever played. (Open) MOVING PICTURES. PATHE WEEKLY.
