17 CRITICISM OF 1ST SHOW PHILADELPHIA. OCT. 6TH Stereopticon - 3 shows - 15 mins. - Sheet - Interesting. May Evans - 3 shows - 8 mins. - Fancy in one - good whistler and good imitation pleasing opener. Martin & Quigg - 3 shows - 15 mins. - garden in two - An above the average three-a-day comedy. Zimmer - 2 shows - 9 mins. - Fancy in two - Some unusually good feats and food throughout. Orchestra - 7 mins. - Pleasing rendition of "Dolly Varden." Swan & O'Day - 3 shows - 19 mins. - St. in one - Very good three-a-day turn, comedy and dancing earning more favor than one would expect for a three-a-day turn. Bridegroom's Reverie - 2 shows - 23 min. - Own Set - Patrice's big frame is employed; but the whole act is given inside the frame. The bridegroom sees here several of his old sweethearts, the girls appearing alternately, one furnishing instrumental music; the other singing. The living picture idea is employed to show a Red Cross nurse attending a soldier. The wind-up shows the bride herself, and she steps from the frame onto the stage. It is a "pretty" act, and affords a pleasing setting for the specialties of the sisters, making their work go better than it would without this spectacular outfit. Edw. Gray - 3 shows - 18 mins. - Fancy in one - One of the best and most successful monologuists seen here in months. Vast improvement in his work and popularity. La Noles - 2 shows - 6 mins. - Garden in three - Replacing the Grobel (?) and Rugs revolving ladder idea, but the ladder is on a stand on the stage. Their feats throughout are praiseworthy and unusually skillful, while their finish -- the rungs of the ladder dropping out and the sides go around separately -- constitute one of the most exciting finishes in variety. This finish is rather of a sensational nature. Johnson & Deane - 2 shows - 11 mins. - C. D. - tendered, perhaps, the best reception of the day, although repeated repitition of the turn has diminished its value somewhat. Ross & Benton - 2 shows - 16 mins. - Own-Set -- A "big" act from a drawing standpoint, but hardly furnishes "big" entertainment. This xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is not to say that the act was not received with laughter and applause at times; but lines and situations are not particularly notable. Vaudeville has advanced much since their former appearance in the business, while the team has not, perhaps xxx advanced at all. Miles-Stavordate Quintette - 2 shows - 10 mins. - fancy in one - Quite a novelty in instrumental musical turn, furnishing a good entertainment. Jess Dandy - 2 shows xxxxxxxxxx- 13 mins. - Fancy in one - Perhaps his place on the bill militated against his success, for he did not go as well as formerly, yet he may have done as well as would the average turn following Grapewin in this show. Grapewin & Chance - 2 shows - 23 mins. - Box Set - The hit and the laughing hit of the bill; apparently as strong as ever. ((They followed the Quintette on the bill) Yamamoto Bros. - 2 shows - 13 mins. - garden in three - Some very good feats, and the discharging of pistols while standing on his head at the top of a pole is something we have not had here before; earned hearty applause at times. Biograph - 3 shows - 13 mins. - Sheet - Average show. Comment - It is a "big" show and ought to affect a continuance of big business. Not an entertaining set in the bill and several favorite performers in the programme. J. J. Keirans
