CRITICISM OF 1ST SHOW. PHILADELPHIA. OCT. 20. Stereopticon - did not turn up. Alburtus & Millar - 3 shows - Garden in four - 16 mons - Excellent opener; novel club juggling feats; and cornet playing making it a really double specialty; good in both departments. Hollis & Howard - 3 shows - Sheet - 13 mins. - Served to show anew the popularity of illustrated songs. Although the vocalist was bothered with a cold, act earned general applause. The Zoellers - 3 shows - Wood in four - 10 mins. - Above the three-a-day standard; most of their work entitled to "very good" classification. Murphy & Andrews - 3 shows - St. in one - 15 mins. - Another excellent act from a three-a-day viewpoint; new and good dialogue; and songs popular. Raymond & Hart - 3 shows - C. D. - 7 min. - Two attractive girls doing dancing and acrobatic work, which at times fringed on what we see in burlesque shows; value up to the average three-a-day turn. Dave Nowlin - 3 shows - St. in one - 17 mins. - His double voice specialty alone making him of more than average value; turn throughout, popular; best of three-a-day monologuists; and not many two-a-day monologuists have earned more applause and laughter. Flood Bros. - 2 shows - Gar. in Four - 9 mins. 0 Perhaps more popular than during former engagement. Bertie Fowler - 2 shows - Fancy in one - 19 mins. - Apparently as strong as during former engagements. Papinta - 2 shows - Own set - 17 mins. - Act still along in its class. It has never aroused great enthusiasm, although it must be appreciated. At the finish of xxx xx the act she was given about as much applause as during former visits. Biograph - 4 shows - Sheet - 7 mins. - Good lot of pictures. Musical Johnstons - 2 shows - Fancy in one - 14 mins. - First rate musical turn. Ryan & Richfield - 2 shows - Box Set - 30 mins. - If anything more popular than during former engagement; few acts here of late have provoked so much laughter. Quigley Bros. - 2 shows - St. in one - 27 mins. - Perhaps the most popular of talking comedians, judging by to-day's outburst of enthusiasm. The Baggesens - 2 shows - C. D. - 16 mins. - Quite valuable as a comedy turn, aside from the excellence of the juggling; probably nothing in show provoked so much uproarious laughter. Biograph - 4 shows - Sheet - 8 mins. Williams & Tucker - Act out, owing (Mr. Turner said) to Miss Williams' swollen face. He said it must have been due to an insect's bite, and that Miss William's could not talk. Comment: - We have an above-the-standard show, even without Williams & Tucker. Practically everything in it made good. JOHN J. KEIRANS.
