158 (M. F. Keating) Boston Show, Week of Jan. 19, 1903. Stereopticon, 2 shows, 10 min. in 1--Interesting lot of foreign and misellaneous pictures. Four American Trumpeters, 2 shows, 16 min., open full stage close in 1--This organization is made up of a man and 3 women, who play indifferently on various instruments. Not being able to give them a place with the orchestra, they did not go so strong as on the occasion of their previous engagement. The best work they did is their finish on the xylophone. Nevens and Arnold, 2 shows, 11 min. in 1--Neat singing and dancing act, of the same style as Twin Nices. It went very well indeed. Keith's Orchestra, 2 overtures of 9 min. each. Selections from "King Dodo". Juliet Woods and Fred Ray, 2 shows, 17 min; open in 3, close in 1--This is the first time here of this couple, and the man made distinctly good, being one of the cleverest eccentric comedians we have had for some time. The woman only fair but sufficient for the act. Dick Lynch and Ada Jewell, 2 shows, 14 min., open in 1, close in 3--Opening was made with a comic illustrated song, which the audience was not "fly enough" to catch onto but took seriously, instead of seeing it as a burlesque effort. The balance of the act consisted of the usual singing and dancing numbers, and was well received. Biograph, 3 shows, 16 min. in 1--Excellent list of motion pictures. Polinetti and Picque, 2 shows, 15 min., full stage--Comedy and straight horizontal bar performance. Capital act and went strong. Wilbur Hill and Willette Whittaker, 2 shows, 12 min. in 1--In banjo solos and coon songs. The opening was very quiet and elicited little applause, but Miss Whittaker woke them up with her coon songs, and received several hearty encores. Motogirl, 2 shows, 12 min., full stage--This novelty went as well as last week, and we will probably want to hold her for another 6 days. Certainly the whole town is talking about her. LaMar and Gabriel, 2 shows, 15 min. in 1--This team did not arrive until late, having missed the train in New York. I was obliged to shift them and Lew Hawkins in the afternoon show. The little chap, Gabriel, is working in white face, and in my opinion is funner than ever. They made a solid hit. Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Kaley, 2 shows, 19 min., full stage--Presenting for the second time here their comedy sketch, "Uncle Phineas", which was capitally played and received with laughter all the way through. I consider it one of the best sketches of its class in the varietes. Lew Hawkins, 2 shows, 16 min. in 1--Blackface monologue and singing comedian. Considering the fact that he follows George Day, who was one of the hits of last week's show, Hawkins did remarkably well, and I think will go big during the balance of the week. Juggling Johnsons, 2 shows, 9 min. full stage--This quintet of club manipulaters is easily the best in the country, and beyond criticism. This afternoon they seemed to be somewhat cramped for room, working in their own stage setting, and we will give them one of ours tonight. Tom Browne, 2 shows, 15 min. in 1--This colored mimetic comedian, and his partner, amde a big hit with their clever imitation; songs, and dances and distinctly made good in a hard place on the bill. Howell Hansel Co., 2 shows, 27 min. full stage--Presenting the one-act farce "The Man Upstairs", which was done here about 4 years ago. With the exception of Mr. Hansel, no member of the cast was as good as Mrs. Peters, she cannot begin to fill Maggie Fielding's shoes. OPening is quiet enough, but there are a lot of funny situations, and closed strong. In an earlier place in bill it will be much better. May Evans, 2 shows, 10 min. in 1--Whistling solos and vocal mimicry. Pleasing little act, which could fill a better place in the program if need be. Ozav and Delmo, 2 shows, 14 min. full stage--Straight and comic juggling. Excellent turn, and one which would stand for a better place in the bill. Chas. Barry and Hulda Malvers, 2 shows, 18 in. full stage Eccentric comedian and vocal soubrette. His act is by far the best ever played in this position in the programme and it certainly pleased the unusually large number who remained to see it. Barry is a clever eccentric comedian and worthy of a better place in the bill. Comments:- The show is one of the best we have had for a long time considered from the stand point of eveness of merit, there not being a single poor set from start to finish. It becomes every day more apparent that the new change is going to be far the better, as many more people are in evidence during what we were wont to call "the off hours".
