219 CRITICISM OF SHOW. KEITH'S THEATRE,PHILA.,PA. MAR. 23RD. Cantwell & Jennings-10 mins.-C.D.F. in 2-Two men,one grotesque;one straight. The straight man does some clever work with a cane. Fair act. Lowe & Hughes-C.D.F. in 2;close in one-Man and woman, in a musical act. Woman sings two solos, and they wind up with some good work on the xylophone. Good "small" musical act. Kennedy & James-15 mins.-C.D.F. in 3;lcose in one-Man and woman, in a sketch, entitled "Dr. Daffy." It is a crazy sort of a talking act that can be classed as good. The [Sagnoux?]-15 mins.-Gar. in 3; close in one- Man and woman, in double juggling specialties. They dress very neatly and carry a lot of trick stuff. Good act. Sweatnam & Maxwell-20 mins.-C.D.F. in 2; close in one-Two men, blackface comedians, in a sketch, entitled "The Rivals." Have not made up my mind whether I like Sweatnum better in his monologue, for this sketch did not make the big hit I anticipated. They close the act with the old pill swallowing that McIntyre & Heath do in "The Man from Montana." Carleton & Terre-15 mins. in one-Two men, comedy act, fair to good. Sandow-35 mins.-Spec. Set.-Feature;did nothing new. I think he has reached his limit;in fact, I thought so last week. Wm. Cahill-15 mins.-in one-Irish monologue. He has Geo. C. Davis's style, and tells some very clever Irish stories. Has a good delivery and went well. Davis & McCauley-25 mins.-C.D.F. in 3-Man and woman in Edmund Day's sketch, entitled "The Unexpected." This act played at the Auditorium four weeks ago with the Empire Show. It is a good act,but has a weak wind up. However, act as a whole can be classed as very good, as sketches go. Mrs. Wynne Winslow-10 mins.-Spec. drop in one-Concert singer. These soloists all look alike to me;and as I am not a musical critic, I am not in a position to say whether she is as good as Charlotte Guyer George or better. She sings some of Mantelli's selections and seemed to please. Genaro & Bailey-20 mins-C.D.F.in 3-Man and woman, in a sketch, entitled "A Victim of Circumstances." The act is a very "warm" one;some of their stuff had to be cut. It cannot be classed as a refined act, although it is a good one. It appeals to the gallery more so than the orchestra. Geo. Evans-15 mins. in one-Will undoubtedly be the hit of our show this week. He has a new song "In the Good Old Winter Time,"and endeavors to teach it to the audience,in which endeavor he succeeds in a greater or less extent. Rio Bros.-12 mins.-Gar. in [?]-Greatest ring act in the business. Reidy & Currier-15 mins. in one-Man and woman, high class vocalists. She was the third woman on the bill who had a solo to offer and it rather overdid the solo work. However, they have a good act and would [good?] a great deal better on a bill with less of their kind. Cook & Clinton-15 mins.-Landscape in 4-Two women who do some very clever rifle shooting and a greatly please d the audience. Grant & Grant-15 mins. in one-Two coons, in the regulation coon song and dance in one. As good as the average team,no better and no worse. They all dress [flashly?];use a spot light and work like wild fire Ramza & Arno-14 mins.-Gar/ in 5-grotesque acrobats and comedians;use two dummies to good advantage. It's a strong "Children act", and we'll probably shift it for Saturday afternoon and give the children a chance to laugh at it. Show as a whole is good. There is not a really bad act on the bill, but at the same time there is not a real feature for drawing power. Sandow has been here too long to draw them in now,and Evans is not well enough known here to bring in much money. H. A. DANIELS.
