CRITICISM Fifth Avenue Theatre, New York City. Week of December 11, 1911 THE STANLEYS: Silhouette Fun in Shadow Land. Interesting and amusing containing several good novelties. Very well received and good opener. 9 minutes, full stage. BISON CITY FOUR: Use drop in 1-1/2 showing saloon, with practical doors, etc. which gives opportunity for a lot of "rough house" comedy. Their voices are good - laughs were frequent. 16 minutes in 1-1/2. FLANAGAN & EDWARDS: In "On and Off" well known. They have injected some new material and seems to go exceedingly well for a vehicle which has gone the rounds. 16 minutes open in one 6 minutes. CHARLOTTE RAVENSCROFT: Singing Violinists. Pleasing personality, nicely costumed, good selections, and fairly good execution. 10 minutes in one. JOHN C. RICE & SALLY COHEN: In "Our Honeymoon". It is surprising the manner in which this couple were received. The act I presume is known to everbody, everywhere, but nevertheless they had them laughing and finished with a good hand, presume the audience were entertained for 21 minutes. CLEMONS 7 DEAN: Man and woman in a neat and novel singing and dancing act, both good personality and good voices. Woman makes four changes and each a very pretty costume. The man handles ragtime songs in a very clever manner and his "drunk" dance is a treat. The jury sanctioned their offering. 13 in one. THE LEADING LADY: "B. A. ROLFE" musical comedy with seven girls and two men. The girls look pretty, sing well and add beauty to the presentation. Ralph Lynn portrays the character of a "silly ass" in good shape. Marguerite Haney is pretty and plays the part fairly good. The scenery is handsome. The story is weak, with stupid lines at times. The audience, however, were amused a little. 29 minutes. special set. CHARLEY DOOIN & JIMMY MC COOL: in a little singing skit entltled "after the Game". Charley Dooin has been in the lime light all week as a "target" for advertising purposes. Every day we have had a "live" story with Dooin as the center attraction, in fact he has been the softest advertising proposition I know of and he is some actor. They offer a very artistic singing skit, with some bright monologue. Dooin works like a "regular" as cool as a cucumber and is ably assisted by Jimmy McCool. Dooin has the audience with him at every performance. Big advance applause - applause after every song. Dooin is simply the hit of the show. 22 minutes in one. THE AHEARN TROUPE: One of the best comedy bicycle acts on the American stage. Rather unfortunate for the New York managers, the new "Bureau for Fire Prevention" which gives the Fire Comissioner more power than the Mayor in any matter pertaining to fire prevention, and who is the only man in New York who can positively close your house without any notice, objected to the gasoline in the motorcycle, which is used in the race at the finish of the act. It simply takes the edge off, as they are compelled to use bicycles. However, they close the show to good applause. 11 minutes full stage.
