C. E. BARNS. PHILADELPHIA SHOW. JULY 1, 1912. SELBINI & GROVINI. 12 min. F.S. Avery lively act. Started out with a little juggling and proceeded to their mandolin and guitar work, afterwards their ground-tumbling and athletic stunts, including some clever work with the sticks and hats. Finished well with some very good bicycle work. A very acceptable opener and could hold a better spot with credit. SPENCER & SPENCER. 9 min. in one. Boy and girl song and dance act for an early spot on the bill. Being Philadelphia people, they got more applause than an act of this kind usually receives on a Monday afternoon but good enough for an early spot on any bill. SUTCLIFFE TROUPE. 11 min. F.S. This is one of the most finished and satisfactory acts of its kind we have ever played. It starts with a good swing and whatever they do in a musical, acrobatic or dancing line is extraordinarily well done, picturesque and carefully costumed. Received constant applause and closed big. Could hold any spot on the bill with entire credit. JOE LANIGON. 17 min. in one. A Philadelphia boy who has been playing the small time. Came in this week on a trial salary to show. Was as much of a surprise to us as he was to the audience, as he made absolutely as good as any $300 man we have had in the house this season. He is a peculiar looking chap, having a peculiar style of delivery and a good singing-and-talking voice. His talk is up-to-date and witty, his parodies good. Can recommend for a good spot in any house on the circuit and can be closed for a moderate salary next season, and it should be done. DEVLIN & ELLWOOD. 16 min. F.S. This sketch has been presented here before and on this occasion made quite as strong an impression as previously. Very cleverly written and well acted. A good live laughing sketch for this time of the year. WILLA HOLT WAKEFIELD. 14 min. in one. Advance applause. Miss Wakefield is a favorite here and most of her material, which was new, went well. Did "Pals" as an encore which went big. Should go better at night. EIGHT ENGLISH ROSES. 16 min. F.S. A very sprightly and altogether pleasing dancing act. The girls are all pretty, very fetchingly costumed and dance exceptionally well either singly or together. Some applause throughout and closed strong. BUD FISHER. 15 min. in one. Got strong advance hand. This man's work is too well known to need comment except to say that Fisher will undoubtedly prove a strong drawing card, as there is not a man, woman or child in this city that does not know "Mutt and Jeff." Every one of his cartoons got a big hand. Mr. Fisher's drawing board is very unique and at the same time practical. His finish with drawings of cartoons of characters in the audience went very big and got him a fine closing hand. MAX'S BURLESQUE CIRCUS. 16 min. F.S. A good closing act and happens to be particularly valuable to us this week, as it is such typical German knockabout fun. Some of the trained animal act work is good. Act makes a laughing finish with the revolving table, the unrideable donkey, etc., in the Berzas manner. Act went went throughout and makes a good closer. KINETOGRAPH. A very interesting Pathe film of current events. GENERAL REMARKS. A fair Summer show. CUTS JOE LANIGON. Reference to "mother-in-law", "heaven is my home" and "undertaker." DEVLIN & ELLWOOD. Expression "what the h--- do you think of that."
