WISDOM Condensed from PLUTO January, 1941 And the plea which he put before his audience was, that of paramount importance is the control of the air, the formation of Airmen's federation, world peace by a world police of Wings Over The World. "We must be ready to put this plan into effect," he declared, "directly the armistace comes." "What do you think of man and his life?" he asked. "Do you think we have direction, purpose, or like MacBeth, that life is 'a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifies nothing.' Most of you, I venture to say, would vote against MacBeth. Do you believe there is a divine destiny for mankind--that progress is inevitable? Or do you believe that man must make efforts to gain and retain his ends?" Mr. Wells believes man's fate is in his own hands. And he made a true confession. "if the world should turn to me and say, 'well, Mr. Wells, you have written about these Utopias now, for many years. We'll back you. What shall we do now? Show us the way.' Why--I should be muchly embarrased," he admitted. "I should say, 'why thank you very much; but we aren't quite ready yet--we need time." A question period followed. Those I can remember were: "Do you feel the United States can keep out of war?" Ans. "Yes; very easily so." "Do you believe the United States is on the road to Socialism?" "Yes I do. I hope so." "Have you given up your world encyclopedia idea?" "No, but control of the air is now of primary importance. The problem urges." I wondered why all these people were here to hear Wells? Were many Britons? Was there a smattering of Socialists? Literateurs? Reporters? And if these accounted for 90% or 99% of the audience, was there a small percent left of -- SLANS? Hom superiors? Star-begottens? THE SHOCK SUPREME By the genius of Eustance c. Bildgewater Condensed from THE DAMN THING February, 1941 LUDENDORFF KOPFDROPP left earth a hero. He piloted our first rocket-ship into the void in the year 1955. The Monad, as she was called, after the Technate which had made her construction possible (plug for Technology Inc.), was a mighty ship, and was blessed by the entire world. What revelations Ludendorff Kopfdropp would bring back, even the scientifiction fans hesitated to imagine. Three years later, after Ludendorff had been given up for lost, a fiery meteor shot down from the heavens, and piled up in Waukegan, Ill., taking the life of comedian Ray Bradbury, radio star of the year. (This was the one bit of good which the "meteor" was said to have done. The "Meteor" was the Monad, and of the original crew, only Ludendorff Kopfdropp was alive, a hopeless lunatic. The ship's log held the dreadful secret of the delay in the return, and the fate of the hardy crew. Ludendorff landed on Mars, per schedule. He was nearly floored when he found Martians to be JUST AS PAUL HAD DRAWN THEM ON THE SCIENTIFICTIONAL MAGASINE BACK COVOURS!!! Goaded on, against the wishes of his crew, he flew them to Venus. Yes, a form of amphibian life was there, JUST AS PAUL HAD DRAWN THEM! For three years, Ludendorff visited the planets, while his crew died from the strain. Yes, all the planets were inhabited! And, they all were PRECISELY AS PAUL HAD DRAWN THEM FOR FANTASTIC! Finally, Ludendorff set the controls for earth, a raving maniac, alone with his dead crew. For an old scientifiction fan, the shock had been too much. Here lies Ludendorff Kopfdropp, first earthman to see the planets. He found life thereon just as Paul had drawn it for the mags. The shock was too much. He died a raving maniac. Pax [[illegible]].
