Page Four F M Z DIGEST Picture by Tom Wright From FANTASITE, April, 1941 EULOGY ON THE SUICIDE OF A STF FAN-SCIENTIST By Harry Warner Jr From SNIDE, Number 2 Here lie the remains of the first rocketeer Who thought he would go through the void up to Mars. They laughed when he climbed in his spaceship; their sneers And snickers resounded clear up to the stars. For he was a madman: he smoked not, this bloke, And that's why he couldn't take off; here's the catch: The rockets lie dead, and so does he, there's no smoke, He couldn't get started; he hadn't a match! MORAL: And when of his spaceship some poor nut enthuses, Remember: it takes fire to set off the fuses. GARGOYLE'S GLOSSORY OF By D. R. Smith ACTION: A fluffy chase-me-charlie incoherent muddle connecting the love scenes. The only thing sacred and inviolable to the s-f magazine editor. ALIEN, FRIENDLY: A hypothetical being of no possible use to a s-f author. AMAZING: A magazine so-called because of what the editor gets away with. BATTLE, MURDER & SUDDEN DEATH: The three things indespensible to a successful s-f story. Hence the strong pacifistic element in fandom. COMMON-SENSE: One of the many senses a s-f character must not have, otherwise the stories would finish very soon after the start. ENTITY, ALIEN: Anything uncommon with a dislike for the hero. FAN: A person who reads but does not enjoy, s-f. HACK: A man who writes for money, as contrasted with a fool, who does not. HERO: An indestructible young man with the brains of a walrus and the luck of a lunatic. HEROINE: An indestructible young woman with the common-sense of a canary, the courage of a shell-shocked rabbit, & the charms of a poorly-drawn fashion-late. MAGAZINE, FAN: A publication in which persons whose opinions interest
