FANTASY-TIMES "The World of Tomorrow Today!" ______________________________ Vol. 2 - No. 20 Corona, 18 May 1947 Whole No. 51 ______________________________ Philcon News 14 May (CNS) A clarification has come in from Milton A. Rothman, Director of the Philcon Society, as to the Big Pond Fund, which is trying to raise enough money to bring British fan and prozine editor, Ted Carnell to the Fifth World Science Fiction Convention (The Philcon) to be held in Philadelphia this Fall. Mr. Rothman states that tho the chances of Ted Carnell arriving at the Philcon are mighty slim due to lack of cash and other troubles, Carnell is still trying to make it and the Big Pond Fund is still on. Mr. Rothman again states that IF Ted Carnell can’t make it this year, the money of the Big Pond Fund will be kept as the Big Pond Fund for next year, at which time Carnell or another British fan will again try to get here. The raffle: everyone contributing a $1.00 or more to the Big Pond Fund gets a chance to win an excellent prize such as a copy of The Fox Woman by Merritt and that gorgeous illustration from The Star Rover which appeared in Famous Fantastic Mysteries; is still going to be held at the Philcon. Fantasy fans who want to contribute money to the Big Pond Fund should contact Forrest J. Ackerman, Box 6151, Metro Station, Los Angeles 55, Calif. By (NNS) we hear that the Big Pond Fund now has $53.00. From L. Jerome Stanton, Associate Editor of Astounding, we learn that Astounding will contribute original covers and inside illustrations to the Philcon Auction. To stifle once and for all the rumors that have been floating around concerning this touchy matter, we shall now give you the latest dope straight from the horses mouth, to wit, L. Jerome Stanton, Associate Editor of Astounding SCIENCE FICTION. The paper situation is still tight and the front office at Street and Smith shows no indication of allotting any paper towards the revival of Unknown. The most that can be said is that the front office has issued a definite “maybe”. As for any rumors about a definite date of issue, no one at S & S has set one. So all you rumor mongers can go back to mongering remembering that your rumors have been officially scotched. _____________________________ May II Meeting of PSFS The featured speaker at the May 11 meeting of the PSFS was Helen Cloukey, who spoke on Mutations. She attempted to show that mutations would not be as prevalent after an atomic war as stf authors assumed, mainly because of the fact that those who might bear mutants would either be dead or sterile. A new constitution was adopted which is simple and concise. The May 25th meeting will feature a talk by Milton A.
