PAGE 4 CYCLOPS WESTERN FAN PUBLICATION JOE FORTIER FAPA (Suggested by Robert W. Lowndes, "American Fan Pubs.-1939", Scientifan) Never before in the history of good old U.S.A. has Western Fandom been so prolific and outstanding in the field of imaginative fiction fan Publications. It has in some ways paralleled the East's deluge of professional publications; unparalleled is the new high in quality of those amateur publications. It was once demanded that there be a magazine to fulfill certain requisites: regularity, neatness and superior quality. Many of these magazines meet the standards to the point of surpassing, yet there is an empty niche. A few of the publishers have been filling the now empty ranks of the F.A.P.A. after revification under the new officers. The quote will have been reached before this article is published, and those fifty members, both old and new, give great promises for Stfandom. Increasing is the enrollment of these in the Rocky Mountains and the far west Some time back the F.A.P.A. offered the only hope to struggling new editors who had the goods, so to speak, but no means of offering some. Now there is a new star on the Horizon and a promising one at that. A great quantity of Stfans have been entering Starlight Publications. The entirety of 1940 netted a total of three of four members ----- the same number of magazines; such a comparative shrt part of 1941now finds ten members and possibilities of six more at this writing -- with promises of twice as many magazines. This comparatively new organization, despite a hard struggle for recognition, has maintained an output of rare high quality as the F.A.P.A. usually does. Under the new 1941 schedule, plans have been formulated for an output of rare quantity coupled with the increasingly good quality. There are no award as in the F.A.P.A. nor are there offices for everyone assumes an equal responsibility. At this writing, however, a plan for laureates and other awards as well as offices is being created.
