me a rather nice analysis of myself in your sentence, "Does it indicate a feeling of loneliness on the intellectual level, for which he seeks solave on an emotional plans?" I'd never quite thought of this in just these words, but as I reflect on the matter, I realize that most of my antics during the past 29 plus years can very well be explained by taking the affirmative of this question. Of course, I make no high-flown claims of being a genius (I.Q. as of 1928 was 183 in case you were wondering), but I can see that I've very seldom had anyone with whom I could find true companionship in the things of the mind. Of course, one angle to all this that you didn't mention is the fact that when one has become somewhat tedious. In other words, most of the more intellectual people are atrophied emotionally, and do not find any need for sex, or anything else that is not on a purely mental plane. Then when the person who has gotten used to sublimating his intellect thru his emotions finds himself thrown with intellectuals of the type I describe, he finds himself rather out of sympathy with them; for they do not wnat to drink, dance, chase women, or do any of the other things one has gotten accustomed to doing. Thus, after a few hectic sessions devoted to intellectual matters, I at least become fed up and want to go places and do things, rather than spending my evenings in futile discussion. The rift occurs, and the Stray Lamb of Clarkston goes on his way, leaving the more mental people to their arid discussions. I find a great deal of pleasure in fandom, but I could never lose myself in either fandom or stf the way many of the fen do. I find such widely assorted things as hot jazz (please, no symphony), night clubs, honky-tonks, liquor, sex, pinochle, sporty clothes, and the other foibles pf humanity (as opposed to fandom) not only pleasant, but necessary for my continued happiness. As to your yardsticks, genius-measuring, and such-like, I feel that you are not giving enough weight to the all-rounf personality. Pure mind is but one of the factors necessary for success. Thus you will find the high IQ Al Ashley happily peddling a taxicab and the equally high IQ FTLaniac running a punch press. In my own case, my better than average mind does me absolutely no good because other phases of my personality are inadequate; I have little or no ambition, no particular desire for money, and--as I implied above--would much rather go out on a drunken party with some hyper-babe (or even my wife for that matter) than to spend my evenings in self-improvement. I don't know if I've contributed anything to your discussion or not, but if the matter proves to be of any interest to the FAPs, I'll gladly go into greater details on what I consider to be the advantages of what might be called emotional sublimation of one's intellect. ---oOo--- PHANNY #3 (but this time, the WINTER number). First, while of course I am merely exposing the non-intellectuality of the FTLaniac, I think that FAPA is devoting far too much space to synthetic languages, word languages, and other allied topics. DB's alphabet showed a good deal of work, but I think it advanced the world just about as far as the pinochle game I had the other night with Pogo and Kepner.... Please refer back to my remarks on Efty; they also apply to your review of Fan-Dango #2......And AMEN to your remarks on baseball vs. football! ---oOo--- MOPSY #15. I don't think you have to worry about any kind of inbreeding among fen--intellectual or otherwise. The average fan is in no danger of any kind of breeding--something about sex (other than Vomaidens and highly theoretical discussions) is far too far removed from the intellectual plane to interest very many of our little impotents.
