(7) BOOK REVIEW EARTH ABIDES BY GEORGE STEWART....RANDOM HOUSE.....$3.00 This is THE science-fiction novel of 1949 for my money. AT least as far as new books are concerned. I have not read anything new to compare with it. It is most entertaining and is very well written. There are some beautiful prose passages in it. The plot is ann old one used many times in science-fiction stories but is aptly handled and given somewhat of a different twist. It is the world end type dealing with the destruction of civilization by killing off all the people with a plague that cannot be cured. The novel deals with one Isherwood Williams who survives the epidemic. He is a college student who wonders what will happen to man. He is the on-looker for awhile, traveling over the United States observing the changes in the cities and lads without man's card. There are some beautifuk descriptive writings at this point. Ish, as he becomes known, finally becomes worried about man's declining condition and tries to start him back on the road to recovery. He finds a few survivors and starts a small colony. He finds an unwillingness to learn on the childrens' part. He tries to teach man to grow his own food and work for what he needs but is unsuccessful for man can break into the stores and get his food from cans and his clothes ready-made. His children and children's children revert to a sort of barbaric tribe and treat Ish as a God. He invents the bow and arrow for them and teaches them how to make fire with sticks hoping to send them upwards again as these were man's most difficult inventions. This book, I heartily recommend to all science-fiction fans. I'm sure you'll find some pleasant hours in reading it. ......Russell K.
