THE HOUSE Since the spring of 1971, the Chicano and Indian-American students began negotiations with The University of Iowa to establish a center to support the culture and life style of the Chicano and Indian-American student on campus. The Chicano Indian-American Cultural Center will be a focus for Chicano and Indian-American students to meet and exchange ideas. The Chicano Indian-American Cultural Center, or The House, was finally established in mid-August at 115 North Clinton. Proposed events for the coming semester are: Movies Poetry Readings Chicano Theatre Music Brown Abraxas Art Speakers Socials Chicano Lit Risa Y Desmadre CHICANO INDIAN-AMERICAN CULTURAL CENTER 115 North Clinton Iowa City, Iowa Executive Administrator: Nancy Barcelo Executive Director: Juan Rodriguez Board of Directors: CIASU Officers Program Advisor: Nancy Gonzalez Chairman, Dept. of Anthropology PURPOSES 1. To provide a permanent setting for Chicano and Indian-American students to gather in an informal atmosphere reflecting the needs and interests of Chicano and Indian-American students in The University community. 2. To provide a center fort the cultural expression and enrichment of Chicano and Indian-American students and The University community; and 3. To provide an area for academic development for students. THE UNION The Chicano Indian-American Student Union was founded by/and for the Chicano and Indian-American students who want to deal with the issues affecting his "gente". Since this spring, the 'Chicano Union' started recruiting new students to The University of Iowa. IN the fall, a tutoring program for migrant Chicano children will be instituted. The present members of the Chicano Union have come to be aware if themselves as Chicano Students and Indian-American Students with their own identity and their own culture. They have come together to discover who they are and develop their special abilities.
