SUMMARY OF JOINT MEETING ON ATOMIC ENERGY WEEK Those Represented: American Legion, Daughters of the American Revolution, High Twelve, Business and Professional Women's Club, Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, Girl Scouts, Y.M.C.A., Parent Teacher's Ass'n., Daughters of Isabella, League of Women Voters and Council of Churches. Purpose of Atomic Energy Week: To bring to the people of Burlington and to Des Moines County the basic facts and social implications of atomic energy through an intensive educational campaign during the last week of October. There was general agreement with the statement that the alternatives before the American people are informed action or obliteration. It was also agreed that the peacetime potentials of atomic energy as well as its destructive force should be covered by the program. Policy: Atomic Energy Week in Burlington is to be purely educational stressing only the over-all and scientific facts and problems, recognizing that international control and strong international organization is essential, but leaving it up to the individual to decide the final answers. No specific legislative or political action will be requested. Program: It is proposed that the purpose as state above, be achieved by as many of the following means as possible. Week to be opened by sermons on subject in all churches; mass meeting with nationally known speaker; public opinion polls; "give out" booths; distribution of material through stores, monthly bills, in doctors' offices, beauty parlors etc, take-home flyers for school children; speakers' bureau to furnish all organizations with discussion panel, 16 m.m. movies, speakers on subject; daily radio programs; daily newspaper publicity; nine minute movies and trailers in theaters; displays in store windows, schools, library etc. Organization: A steering committee of one representative from each cooperating organization will be formed at the next meeting (4 P.M. September 22, at the home of Mr and Mrs J. C. Pryor, 2009 West Avenue). League personnel will carry out plans up to that time when members of other organizations will be assigned to committees on various aspects of the program. League members will continue to be available to these committees to help them carry out their jobs. Cooperating Organizations: While general enthusiasm was expressed by those present and many pledged cooperation from their groups, it was stressed by others that they could not speak officially until the proposal had been presented to their respective boards. Some ways in which individual groups can help carry out the program are: distribution of free material to members; include speakers in programs on Atomic Energy Week or program nearest to that week, defray the expenses, bring attention to the subject in bulletins and other house organs, distribute tickets for mass meeting.
