{Photo of protestors with box of text overlaying photo: DEMONSTRATE MARCH 21: REMEMBER SHARPSVILLE! on Feb. 20, the SDS National Interim Committee met and decided to call for nation-wide demonstrations (world-wide, if possible!) on March 21 to commemorate the Sharpesville Massacre. In 1960, 6000 black Africans held a demonstration at Sharpesville against the racist South African's government's apartheid program. 67 were brutally murdered - shot down in cold blood by police. It's people like them, not Nixon or Johnson, who are the heroes of history. The best way to commemorate the fight at Sharpesville is to hold these demonstrations and link Sharpesville to the fight going on all over the world today to crush racism.} NATIONAL ON CAMPUS ACTION... ...CAMBRIDGE Harvard-Radcliffe black students and the Pan-African Liberation Committee of Boston have started a struggle to force Harvard to sell its $21 million worth of stock in Gulf Oil Co. and use that money to pay for low-income housing in Cambridge. Gulf Oil, the largest U.S. investor in Portugese-controlled Africa, is one of the biggest contributors to the Portugese government's racist and imperialist war against African peoples' liberation movements fighting in Angola, Mozambique and Guinea-Bissau. The demand for Harvard to sell its stock supports these struggles. On Thurs., Feb 24, over 100 black students and some white supporters held a press conference to publicize these demands. Then they marched to Harvard pres. Bok's office, but Bok wouldn't see them - he locked the doors. So about 80 students sat-in at University Hall. Very soon, Bok discovered he could met with the black students after all. Later that evening, when Bok told the Harvard Crimson that Harvard was morally opposed to Portugal's treatment of Africans, black students & PALC attacked this statement as "ambivilent, misleading, and equally as non-committal as was his conduct at the meeting." A petition is being circulated and plans are being made to keep up the pressure and GET HARVARD OUT OF THE GULF! FLASH As we go to press, we heard that SDS at City College of New York was banned! The administration used the excuse that SDS had shouted down Meir Kahane - head of the racist Jewish Defense League - and had fought back when 35 of his goons jumped members of SDS. The deans barred SDS from having a meeting, leafletting and setting up tables. But SDS is throwing this right back in their faces....by completely defying the ban. They set-up a table RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE DEAN'S OFFICE; have been leafletting and petitioning about the ban, and are having an SDS meeting. BAN RACISM, NOT SDS!! ...CHICAGO 75 black students at Triton Jr. College in Chicago SEIZED THE FINE ARTS BUILDING AND HELD FIVE ADMINISTRATORS CAPTIVE until they conceeded to the demands for a black cultural center, studies program, representation on the student senate, one black administrator, and the firing of the faculty advisor to the school newspaper. The action was sparked off by a column in the paper called "Raymer Rambles On" that attacked black and latin students as lazy and stupid. After putting down the black students for not being grateful for being allowed to stand in the same cafeteria lines as whites, Raymer went on to slander blacks: "It takes zero brains to get hung up on dope and even less intelligence to blow your money on big cars, women and the high life. Who you tryna kid? says Amos. Jes myself says Andy...niggers and chicanos lend me your ear." As a result of this article the students got together a petition and presented it to the administration on Jan. 8, but as of March 1, the only attention given to minority students was the addition of some songs by black artists in the juke box. In a statement issued the day after the takeover, the Black Student Organization made it clear why they seized the building: "The Black students at Triton college are through with being the "invisible man". Yesterday we took positive steps toward the acquisition of what is rightfully ours. No longer will we tolerate being ignored at a college where our taxes are being utilized." The power of the black students' militancy has Triton on the run. The school was shut down for 3 days and as of now there are 12 state and local cops stationed at each entrance of the school. But the fight is far from over. The administration is threatening to take back their agreement to give in on the demands. They have suspended 26 students and what's more, State's Attorney Hanrahan (who ordered the murders of black panthers Fred Hampton and Mark Clarck two years ago) is threatening to prosecute everyone involved. The Black Student Organization of Triton is asking all SDS chapters and any other groups and individuals to send letters to the school in solidarity with them and demanding amnesty. Write to Dr. Deitlin, c/o Triton Junior College, 2000 N. Fifth Ave., River Grove, Ill. Send a copy to Black Student Organization, 26 S. 19th Ave., Maywood, Ill. ... BOSTON Northeastern SDS won 2 anti-racist demands recently. We got rid of racist dorm proctor "Moe" Morrison & got the cops out of the dorms too. This is ONE STEP in our campaign against harassment of black students at N.U. Morrison is a well-known racist. One weekend he started several fights with black students and their friends, trying to force them out of the dorm. N.U. deans back-up this bigot by putting in 24-hour guards to keep out "outsiders" (black non-students) and harass black students. They started a racist smear campaign of anti-black horror stories about the fights, trying to get more whites to attack the black students. SDS organized 50 black & white students. We confronted the administration, demanding that Morrison & the cops be dumped. After the second confrontation, they gave in. Now they're trying to stop a dorm forum against racism being planned by SDS members and friends. Come to the forum - STETSON WEST< N.U., Mon., March 13!! ...ST. LOUIS 75 students from the Committee to End the War, Campus Committee to Free Angela Davis and SDS confronted Admissions Officer Meuller to oppose the new policy which makes students not in the top 1/4 of their class take and admissions test. This policy discriminates against black and working-class kids. Like I.Q. tests, admissions exams test values and skills middle-class children learn at home & in wealthier schools. The coalition is demanding a debate with the administration and they're circulating a petition (over 400 signatures already!) to get rid of these rotten exams. ...WARRENSBURG Feb. 10. 100 black students took over the student union at Central Missouri State. They were protesting racist harassment in the women's dorms. A cross with the letters KKK had been burned in front of a black student's door; a fire was started outside another's room and a racist sign hung up. Protestors marched past the president's office to demand the dean of women resign - she'd done absolutely nothing about the harassment. Then they occupied the student union. The Highway Patrol was called in to reinforce campus & local cops. 4 students were arrested. The Dean of Student Affairs finally agreed to meet and said girls responsible for one of the incidents would be punished. This harassment must be ended. Racism is no joke. ...BOSTON About 80 students busted up a U. Mass. Boston Board of Trustees meeting. We demanded: 1) No military recruiters 2) Build student housing for the new campus to reliever the housing crisis in surrounding Dorchester and 3) Rehire Frieda Saltzman, a prof not allowed to teach at U. Mass. because her husband is a faculty member at school! (Imagine - they were husband and wife! Apparantly the trustees felt this sort of thing simply could not be allowed.) ...BRONX, N.Y. On Feb. 23, 150 people led by SDS & Bronx Vietnam Vets Against the War stopped Army, Air Force & Marine recruiters at Lehman Jr. College. The Lehman deans invited these con-men despite a referendum 2 years ago banning all military recruiters. They tried to sneak the heroes in without anyone noticing - the only publicity was an ad in the school paper under the headline "More Jobs." But when they showed up we surrounded them with signs reading "Butchers Out!" and "Support GI Rebellion!" and shouted down every one of their lies. ...PRINCETON {Photo of student protestors and police officers} In the last NLN there was a story about the Princeton anti-ROTC fight. 150 linked arms to stop a secret Trustees meting called to bring back ROTC. Although the demonstrators didn't win (yet!), there was such broad support that the deans didn't dare take action against anyone. Now the administration is trying to bring back the Institute of Defense Analysis & close university facilities to local non-students. They want to take back everything we won in several years of struggle. SDS & University Action Group (UAG) plan to fight their moves!
