Photograph Eugenia B. Lorenzo Refocus 71 Rediscovering American Cinema Rediscovery American Photography Refocus 71 will mark the seventh annual presentation of this Film and Still Photography Festival held at The University of Iowa. Refocus began in 1965 as an idea of a few students, faculty, and the Photography and Film Departments. Since its inception it has been sponsored by the Union Board of the Iowa Memorial Union with funding from student fees. This year will mark the first time that Refocus has received outside funding. Films Incorporated, the largest distributor of 16,, films in the country, is supplying the bulk of the films for Refocus 71'. "Rediscovering American Cinema" is the title of Films Incorporated's new listing of films and a title appropriate for Refocus 7. Since Refocus is probably the only festival in the country combining film and photography we added the idea of "Rediscovering American Photography" to the title. With this idea in mind, The University of Iowa Museum of Art wll be exhibiting the Van Deren Coke Photography Collection during Refocus. Begun in 1937, Coke's collection is considered to be one of the finest in the country with over one thousand photographs dating from 1840-1970. The Refocus 71 Student Photography Exhibit will be on display in the Terrace Lounge and the Harvard, Princeton, and Yale Rooms of the Iowa Memorial Union. The exhibit is composed of work contributed from schools throughout the country. Each school is allowed to send ten prints. Last year over fifty schools were represented, making this the largest display of student photography in the country. The most important elements of Refocus are the people and the special invited guests. For past Refocus programs we have had John Szarkowski, Stan Vanderbeek, Wynn Bullock, Rip Torn, Jerry Uelsmann, Arthur Burron and Robert Frank as special guests. Refocus 71 will feature experimental filmmker, Tom Dewitt; screenwriter, Stewart Stern, and photographers Minor White and Van Deren Coke. Thus year we will have the River City Free Trade Zone in Iowa City available for people to get together and show their films after the screenings at the Union. It's a tune to show your own film and meet others interested in film and photography. You,as the participant in this year's Refocus, are not just viewing films and photos which rediscover America's cinematic and photographic arts, you are part of a pilgrimage during which you will witness that which, in these two arts, has brought us to where we are cinematically and photographically. In order to be a competent contemporary viewer and critic of film and photography, you must understand the past in the same empirical sense as you view the media art of today. We hope that Refocus 71 will provide you with ample opportunity to gain an understanding of the past's influence on today's cinematic and photographic expression.
