Showdown, 8 min., color. A very colorful Western spoof. Kenneth Friedman of New York University was awarded a $2,500 grand prize for it. OUR DANCING DAUGHTERS 1928 Tuesday/ March 23/ 4 p.m. Illinois Room Directed by Harry Beaumont; Starring Joan Crawford, John Mack Brown, Nils Aster, Dorothy Sebastian, Edward Nugent, Kathlyn Willams. Restless, reckless Diana loves parties at which she does a mean Charleston. But this is all a front, because deep inside she is virtuous and idealistic. Her babyfaced friend Anne, actually amoral and selfish traps quiet dependable Ben into marriage. Ben eventually discovers her true nature and realizes that he really loves Diana. Anne starts to date other men, and, in a drunken stupor fails down a flight of stairs to her death. In the finale, subdued Diana and Ben face the future together. PARTY GIRL 1958 Friday/ March 26/ 2 p.m. Illinois Room Directed by Nicholas Ray; Starring Robert Taylor, Cyd Charisse, Lee J. Cobb, John Ireland, Kent Smith, Claire Keily In the early 30's crippled but brilliant Tom is the legal mouthpiece for a Chicago gangland empire headed by Rico ( Tom often capitalizes on his disability to sway juries) When Tom falls in love with night club dancer Vicki, he decides to straighten himself our morally and physically and goes abroad for a lengthy operation. Upon his return, Rico threatens to throw acid in Vicki's face unless Tom stays in the gang and helps him out of a legal jam. However, a newly elected prosecutor arrests Tom hoping he'll talk, but for Vicki's sake Tom refuses. She begs him to cooperate with the law, and , after he does, he is released and picked up by his old mob. But he leaves a trail for the police to follow is rescued (no actual shooting is visible) and Rico kills himself rather than face capture. RACHEL RACHEL 1969 Sunday/ March 21/ 7 p.m., Ballroom Directed by Paul Newman; Screenplay by Stewart Stern One of the ads for Rachel, Rachel, posed this question : " Who cares about a thirty five year old virgin?" A New York critic answered: "Well I care. You will too." Miss Woodward's Rachel" as wrought by Newman, cinematographed by Gayne Rescher, edited by Dede Allen, backed by a superb supporting cast - Estelle Parsons, James Olson, Kate Harrington, Donald Moffat, Geraldine Fitzgerald - is Everywoman, every human being in every inner moment of despair and triumph. With Rachel, Rachel , that much-censured place "Hollywood" proved it can turn out films of integrity, involvement and import.
