If you change your major, or if for any other reason you believe that you should have a different adviser, please report to the Advisory Office at 109 Schaeffer Hall. It is important that you know your adviser and that you consult with him regularly about your program of studies, your scholastic progress, changes in registration, or any other matters, scholastic or non-scholastic, that you may wish to discuss with a representative of the College. The curriculum of the College of Liberal Arts may be thought of as consisting of five divisions - basic skills, core courses, foreign language, the major field, and electives. Basic Skills. The basic skills program consists of courses in Communication Skills, Mathematics Skills,* and Physical Education Skills. Unless you meet the exemption standards in the placement tests you will be required to enroll for these three courses. Reports of your placement test scores in Communication Skills and Mathematics Skills will be in the hands of your adviser at the time you register. All freshmen except veterans and individuals twenty-three years of age or over register for Physical Education Skills and take the proficiency tests in the course. A student excused from one course on the basis of his test scores may add another course to his schedule during the first two weeks of the semester. Core Courses. Each student is required to complete an eight-semester-hour core course or appropriate departmental courses in each core area - literature, historical-cultural, social science, and natural science - except that he may be excused from the core requirement in the area of his major if approved by the major department. At least three courses that carry core course credit should ordinarily be completed in the first two years of the student's college career. The literature core course may not be taken until the Communication Skills requirement has been satisfied. Students who are thoroughly prepared in a particular area may satisfy the core requirement in that area by passing a comprehensive examination. A pamphlet describing the comprehensive examination program is obtainable in the Liberal Arts Advisory Office, 109 Schaeffer Hall. Foreign Language. The foreign language requirements may be met by passing an achievement test given by the language departments or by completing an eight-semester-hour course in a single foreign language taught in the University. The achievement tests are announced by the individual language departments and are usually given during the first week of the semester and at other times throughout the year. Announcements will appear on the departmental bulletin boards and in The Daily Iowan. *This requirement may also be met by the completion of sufficient courses in mathematics in high school or of any college course in mathematics. 27
