Students may substitute band for ROTC; however, it should be noted that band will not qualify a student for entry in the advanced ROTC course. Membership in an Active Reserve or National Guard Unit. Those who are participating members of an active reserve or National Guard unit prior to their original registration are excused from ROTC upon presentation of the required evidence to the Military Department commandant's adjutant. They must present their separation records to the Registrar after completing one semester's work in residence. During your freshman and sophomore years, you may request deferment from the draft after the successful completion of one semester of ROTC. Deferments are granted at the discretion of the individual draft boards. Choice of Service. Entering freshman are divided evenly between the Army and Air Force detachments. On the attached card (in the back of this Handbook) please print your name and University number, check your choice of service, and, if you wish, indicate a reason for your choice. If possible, you will be placed in the unit of your choice. Veterans and transfer students who are not required to and do not wish to take ROTC should not indicate choice of Air Force or Army ROTC, but state the reason for exemption and place a check in the space provided. If you are exempt by virtue of belonging to a reserve or National Guard unit, it will be necessary for you to see the administrative officer of the Military Department at registration. After you have completed the card, please return it as indicated. 14
