STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS STUDENT GOVERNMENT Student Senate The Student Senate Office, which is the headquarters for the undergraduate student governing body, is located in the Union. The Student Senate provides overall student government by including the elected representatives of all student housing areas in the twenty-four-member Senate. Each spring the Senate election committee holds All-Campus Elections at which the Student Body President and other organization officers are elected. The Senate is divided into three bodies: the Legislative Branch, the Executive Branch, and the Judicial Branch. The Legislative Branch is composed of the twenty-three housing-unit representatives and it is the policy-setting body of the Senate. It is presided over by the Vice-President of the Senate. The Executive Branch includes the Student Body President, who presides at all executive meetings, the Vice-President and Executive Secretary of the Senate, the Director of the Budget and the Treasury, the Director of Publicity and Public Relations, the Director of Personnel, and the four Standing Commission Chairmen. These commissions are: Academic Affairs, External Affairs, Student Organization, and Student Government. The Judicial Branch is a Student Senate Court of five student justices, who are nominated by the electorates of Associated Women Students, the Men’s Dormitory Councils, the Interfraternity Council and the Student Senate Legislative Branch. This is a court of original jurisdiction for all students who violate the University traffic regulations. The Student Senate is the student’s voice, and any student or student group may consult the Senate on any problem of student interest in the Senate’s open meetings. The Senate coordinates student activities in the wide areas outside the jurisdiction of residence unit governing bodies. Commissions and committees give many students an opportunity to participate directly in student government. Every student helps elect his representative on the Senate. Remember this and vote in the All-Campus Elections! Student Union Board The Student Union Board of sixteen members sponsors and plans all activities for students in the Iowa Union. The Union Board membership is composed of representatives from each college in the University, with six from the College of Liberal Arts, two from the College of Business Administration, and one each from the other colleges. The program areas are executive, social-recreational, educational-cultural, and publicity. The Board elects its officers from the sixteen members. Worked on a Union Board subcommittee is a prerequisite to membership of the committee. The selections are made 58
