Alpha Phi Omega Alpha Phi Omega, national service fraternity is an organization designed to aid University groups in serving the University and community. To be eligible for membership, a student must have been a Boy Scout. In the past, its members have helped on such projects as Campus Chest, Old Gold Days, Homecoming, and campus elections, as well as many other campus functions. Military ROTC (Reserve Officer's Training Corps) is divided into two years of basic and two years of advanced training. One year of basic ROTC is required for graduation of all male, undergraduate, physically fit students who are citizens of the United States, who are under twenty-three years of age, and who have not had any previous military experience. This requirement can be fulfilled in the U.S. Army Infantry, the Army Engineers or the U.S. Air Force. Advanced ROTC is an elective course for which you may apply after completing two years of basic training. If accepted into the advanced corps, you may be offered a reserve commission upon graduation. Those of you who have had at least one year of military service may apply for the advanced ROTC without taking the basic course. The ROTC academic program consists of classroom work and one hour of drill each week. The program is climaxed every May when a federal inspection team, consisting of Army and Air Force personnel visits Iowa to inspect the ROTC program. Training. The terms "basic" and "advanced" apply to the two main categories of ROTC. Basic training includes the fundamentals of drill, instruction in leadership, and voice and command. The advanced course is voluntary and may lead to commission in the Army or Air Force. Those who qualify for the advanced course are required to spend a four or six week period, between their junior and senior years, in summer training at an Air Force base or an Army post. The military department at SUI sponsors a number of extracurricular activities such as the rifle team, the Pershing Rifles, Billy Mitchell Squadron, Hawkeye Company of the U.S. Army and the Pontoniers. Rifle Team. The rifle team is sponsored and coached bu the ROTC staff The team is made up of students in both the Army and Air Force Programs. Pontoniers. Organized in 1932 at the University as an association of engineering students in ROTC the Pontoniers perpetuate the spirit of the original Pontoniers of the Napoleonic armies. Pershing Rifles. Pershing Rifles is a national military fraternal organization. Its purpose is to further military knowledge and to provide social functions for ROTC infantrymen. It was founded and patronized by General John J. Pershing. Billy MItchell Squadron. Billy Mitchell Squadron is composed of Air Force ROTC students. It is a local group named for the famed General Mitchell of World War I. Hawkeye Company of the U.S. Army. The Hawkeye Company of the 68
