HOSPITALITY -- Coordination, Open Houses, Tours. DANCES AND ENTERTAINMENT -- Dances, Spectra, Talent Repertoire. FORUM AND LECTURES -- Issues and Answers, College Quiz Bowl, Last Lectures, Soapbox Soundoff, Symposium. PERSONNEL -- Administration, Leadership Training. PROMOTION -- Publications, Display Cases, Public Relations Palette and Brush, Press Publicity, S.U.B. RESEARCH is the twelfth interest area of the Union Board. Central Party and Entertainment Committee - This is the organization that selects the popular entertainers who perform on the campus during the academic school year. The Committee strives to have at least once concert a month which is usually offered twice int he same night, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union. Central Party and Entertainment Committee also sponsors the Homecoming Dance which presents "two dances for the price of one." The "Big Band Sound" plays in the Main Lounge, while the "Rock 'N Roll Band" performs in the Ballroom and permits the students to move freely between the two dances. Central Party and Entertainment Committee consists of nine members who are selected each spring by student vote. University Committee on Cultural Affairs - This Committee, composed of students and faculty, plans a series of programs presenting outstanding speakers and artists throughout the school year. These events are open to the student body; individual students obtain a ticket by presenting ID cards to the Ticket Desk in the Union. Faculty, staff, and townspeople purchase tickets. The Concert Series presents programs by nationally known music ensembles and individual performers, and the Minneapolis Symphony has presented programs annually. The Lecture Series presents a variety of speakers; recently these have included Carl Rowan, Sir Bernard Lovell, William Stringfellow, Irving Levine, Walter Judd, and Saul Bellow. Spring Festival - This is an educational, informational, and recreational activity planned for the early part of spring to break the monotony of the long, cold, Iowa winter. A wide range of activities, including a variety show, departmental exhibits, a campus carnival, a symposium, water shows, and sky diving events, fill this special week. Students apply for committee positions. Miss U of I Pageant - The selection and crowning of Miss U of I takes place during the Homecoming Week festivities each year. All women's housing units nominate and present their candidates at the Miss U of I Pageant where the announcement of the five finalists is made. Open campaigning and skits take up much of the early part of Homecoming week, climaxed by the all-male vote. The crowning of Miss U of I takes place on the steps of Old Capitol immediately following the annual Homecoming parade. International Center Association - The International Center Association is a student organization made up of both American students and those who come to Iowa from many different countries each year.
