STUDENT LIFE << 25 student religious groups for the purpose of promoting and coordinating inter-religious activities. The Hillel Foundation - is the coordinating student organization for all students of the Jewish faith. Its activities are centered in the Hillel House located at 122 E. Market Street. Newman Club and the Catholic Student Center located at 108 Mclean Street provide programs and activities for all Catholic students. Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship - This is an interdenominational student group meeting weekly in the Danforth Chapel for Bible study and prayer groups. It provides retreats, discussion groups, and social activities for members. YWCA - The Young Women's Christian Association offers membership to any woman student interested in group experience, service programs, and discussion units. The Freshman Y offers a special opportunity for freshman women. Application for membership is available at the Orientation Activities Open House. Political and Social Action Groups University policy encourages presentation of divers points of view on issues of contemporary concern, including politics and civil and social issues; a number of student organizations provide opportunity for study and participation in this area. University facilities are available within limits of the academic schedule for any speakers and programs. Any student organization presenting a controversial issue will have the meeting chaired by its faculty adviser or other faculty member and will require the speaker to respond to questions from the audience. The two major political parties of the United States are represented in the campus student organizations, as well as other political and social action groups: University Young Democrats - To foster and perpetuate the ideas of the Democratic Party. Young Republican League - To attract and train sound leadership for the Republican Party. Young Americans for Freedom - To provide a forum for conservative thought and action. Iowa Socialist league - To study socialist thought and programs and to provide for active participation in the solution of social and economic problems. Students for a Democratic Society - To provide an effective action group oriented toward vital issues of the day. Friends of SNCC - To promote the ideals of racial equality. Athletics and Recreation While intellectual growth is the primary purpose of college, another important phase of every student's life is recreation and athletics. Whether you want to play on the varsity or devote your efforts to supporting those who do, you will find that Iowa offers great opportunities for you. The University of Iowa is associated with the Big Ten Conference and produces many fine teams in all sports. Iowa also has an extensive intramural program which gives every student a chance to participate in the sport or sports of his choice. There are activities to fit the needs of every student, man or woman, and
